I view score as a way to gauge my own progress and improvement.  I don't have the time or energy to try and maintain a high score.  But I can see if my aim is improving or I'm averaging more damage in my bombers.

Well for one thing, time in flight is penalized. Time in flight should mean you are gaining more experience and be rewarded. Waiting in a hanger and upping only when there is an m3 rolling accross the base just to get a better kill per hour doesn't mean your a better gv'er. Shows no tactical abilities what so ever. Take a guy who drives to a base and shoots a tank so an m3 can make it to the maproom gets a worse rating that the guy that hunkers in the tower for that 1 minute kill on an m3.

If some 6 month noob can manipulate the score to be ranked 11th it shows that rank/score does not matter.

No, it shows you have probably spent way too much time hiding in the house and not outside enjoying the summer. If you notice, in a couple days your score will equalize out and be more accurate as more data is collected by more individuals. The less data (i.e. kills, sorties, etc...), the less accurate the results.  I always look good at the beginning of the month too.

Any scoring system will be gamed.  I agree it doesn't matter.  I have been working on my score this tour.   Out of the blocks, it was surpisingly easy to get below 100.  As has been said in posts above, it will go up.  I expect to be 300-400 by the end of the tour.

Score is nothing to get worked up about.  It is just another aspect of the game.  Use it (or not) to have more fun.

I always look good at the beginning of the month too.

I look better with dim lighting and alcohol.

Was just thinking the same papajohns, I was really proud of my score last month up until when a guy with 78 deaths and 18 kills and a solid 3 months playing kicked my azzz, he really outurned outclassed me.  there's lots of people that never rank higher than 500 that I wish I had 1/2 the skill they have.

That's also because a lot of skilled pilots in this game don't fly smart, whether it be a lack of patience, a lack of ability, or a lack of desire, or a combination.  To me, rank is the end result of smart, aggressive, lethal flying.  I never go for rank, I always just try to kill as many as I can, as efficiently as I can, and as quickly as I can, without dying (because I hate getting killed by someone who didn't earn it).  Rank takes care of itself.  Once you start looking for soft fights and vulch fests is when you turn into a score tard, like some do, in particular, those that only have a few sorties in fighter mode per month.  "Oh look, a developing vulch fest, lets go into fighter mode and pad our stats with insane ratios all on wheels-up picks."   You know who you are.

While I'm "suffering" from this due to my combat style, I also think it's fine the way it is.

"Everybody" can get alot a good K/D by flying a Pony to 25k and only engage cons if there is no risk of being killed. K/H offsets that... um... reluctant warrior mindset. And overall, you sure want people to fight, not to avoid fights

But I do agree with your original post, Papajohns. The current scoring system does tend to field a small army of timid pilots who avoid danger just to milk their score and have something to brag about. Getting rid of a numbered rank system might help cut down on some of the "score whoring". Leave the stats system up though, as I do like to check my stats out and look at my Hit % and so forth.
