Cooling new system.
« on: June 11, 2001, 07:04:00 AM »
I'm worried about my new CPU/MB system combo. I just bought me a Barebones 1.2gthunderbird CPU w/a Asus A7A266 MB and a 300 Powersupply/case. The system is up and running now but the ASUS probe tells me my CPU is running at 55-57C !!!! I was told they "lie" about he reported temp by 10 to discourage Overclocking but...

Okay to the meat of the matter, will taking the heatsink off and redoing the conductive sealer stuff with some good stuff make it work better? I'm also going to go out and buy 2 case fans as well. The room the PC is in get kind of warm too...

Of course, I only see what he posts here and what he does in the MA.  I know virtually nothing about the man.  I think its important for people to realize that we don't really know squat about each other.... definately not enough to use words like "hate".

Probe is known to be way off, check the temp in your BIOS. Anything works better than the tape on the heatsink. Thermal paste from Radio Shack works very well for the money.

Hiya's,
OK dog don't panic !!!     :D
I got same system now 1.2 A7a266

Goto Asus mainsite then select German Site, Goto Bios/Socket A then u get to ftp server, There download from Ali A7a266 folder the   1005.05 zip
That's the latest most stable bios
If you flashed a bios before you know what to do, If not ask me and i will post info here on how to do it

Now Asus Probe is good as such well it measures temps exactly the same as motherboard monitor for me BUT !!!!! Asus have there sensor in the zif socket, Now because it can't accurately measure cpu temp it is loaded to exagerate temps somewhat !!!
From 1004 bios's the probe from the bios adds a 10c onto whatever it actually reads (some think it's asus's way of trying to stem clocking ! i dunno for sure but asus rep said 1005 final bios will have full multiplier increments in the bios     :) and will address the over estimated cpu temp)

So for now do the 1005.005 beta bios and knock 10c off whatever probe tells ya

Have Fun

ps..... what revision board have you got ?? mines 1.03 with all the dips on it  :)
Some case fans won't harm as long as ya don't go wild and tax the psu !!!
As for redoing the thermal paste i say only if you put too much on !
Should just want to cover the die very finely as too much causes less thermal transfer from the cpu to the heatsink   ;)
Tip...... if you have a spare AT psu u can use that for fans etc
If it's an ATX type psu u still can but you have to fool it into thinking it's attached to a board......... Find the "Green" wire and link to "Any" "Black" wire, That way allows an ATX psu to work   :)

Hey...I put my new fan in. I just put the thermal GOOOOE on the chip itself... a thin coat. I'm using a chrome Orb but its not impressing me. Did I not use enough GOOOOOOE?

Yo,
For heavens sake man (sighs deeply and gulps some more needed alcohol)  ;)
Chrome orbs are about as good as a chocolate nipple !!!
That said as Cobra pointed out on ya other post.......use a razor blade and scrape goo off and run to shop and get arctic silver or any thermal gunk in a tube a good type is silicone paste
Now too much paste will create heat !!! so you do this...........
Clean original pad/goo whatever it is off heatsink (use new razorblade and do not scratch bottomof hs (heatsink) , On the cpu core itself you will feel the indentation of A. all the ID lines
B. and the amd copyright logo

Now clean the core using what you yanks call rubbing alcohol then once thats done make sure there's no lint/fluff etc on it

Now do the same to bottom of ya hs

Then get a piece of plastic (margarine lid or alike just make sure it's perfectly clean and squeeze a small amount (petti pois (small pea) size onto said lid etc)

Now what you aim to do is cover the cpu core with just enough paste to cover the indents from the lines of id/logo etc

Now on the hs you can do the same apply a tiny amount and with a creditcard edge or alike scrape it all off

You only want to fill any microscopic scratches etc not ice a friggin cake !!!!

Slap the hs on taking care not to chip the edge of the core and way you go

TOO MUCH PASTE = HIGH TEMPS

If you are in doubt look at  http://www.overclockers.com
or http://www.octools.com

there you will find faq's on hs installs etc

Have Fun

Gumpy...err Tit..err Defiance...you kill me and you are also an expert on this stuff and Batdog should absolutely heed your wise words.

Of course if he did he would be talking about how to put the plumbing on that chip..hehe.

In my infinite bone-head wisdom, I put the paste on the chip and the heatsink, but still got temps in the low 40's when its hot in here and running AH, so I didn't screw it up to bad   :)

yea... i ordered a win cak38 HS/fan. I went back to stock fan/HS and its running 60=50 real temp. Seems stable but it'll be better off with new fan. Yea... Iread about the thin coat and thats what i did. My room is just hot to begin with.

Anyway I'll heed your advice w/new HS/Fan defience. You havent been wrong yet  :)
