The German service, that had been set up in 1935, became so effective that RAF chiefs ordered fighters to shoot down the Luftwaffe Dornier 24 seaplane that were unarmed and painted in white with a large red cross. ?

I read somewhere that the German Air/Sea Rescue planes were violating the Geneva Conventions by taking pictures and flying near the British coast for surveillance purposes, thus giving a reason for the British to shoot them down.  The Germans would later arm those planes for defensive purposes.

I also remember hearing of the great efficiency the Germans had at rescuing their own, at least until they were being targeted.

There were reports that the German SAR planes were also used to gather intelligence and a dead pilot isn't one that can come up and fight you later on.  It was an ugly episode in the war but hardly one sided.  The Germans used to do the same, as well as the US.  War is an ugly businesses, especially if you're fighting for your existence.
