Cute Spitfire photo I thought I'd share.
« on: September 03, 2010, 05:52:08 PM »
Did they park this one at a Wal-Mart or McDonalds? Or maybe it's a deleted scene from a particular Alfred Hitchcock movie?

I know I wouldn't want to try and fly through that, so probably a good thing it's not running.  :)
Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

The bird droppings will reduce the max speed by at least 20 mph on that thing.

Notice it is a Polish squadron Spitfire.

and ? (you fail to properly address the "observation", leaving a few options)

It is a 317 sqdn Dywizjon Myśliwski "Wileński" - Vilnius Spitfire Mk. VB (It is JH-H).   Don't know what you're trying to "point out", but the 317th fighters performed sweeps of Normandy on June 6th, 1944.    They also were ground attack for the remainder of the war for the Allied troops.

Kind of like French jokes, they long ceased to be funny.   Especially regarding the circumstances.   JH-H served with No. 317 Squadron between September 1941 and March 1942, when it's career ended through forced landing near Bolt Head, Devon while short of fuel on return from the fighter sweep over France.   IIRC the photo was taken near Northolt, England.

Good man K :)

317 Squadron Spit Vb.  There is a beauty of a Spit Vb restored in 317 Squadron markings.    Part of  the home Spitfire library contains some good books on the Polish Spit drivers.  They did some remarkable things with them.

Don't think Milo meant anything by it, just pointing out the nose marking.

He left it open to interpretation.   If he meant nothing by it, then I'm fine.   Otherwise...... ;)

Being part Polish, I've developed an extreme interest of the Polish Air Force prior to and during WWII.   If you have any recommendations of Polish books, I'd very much enjoy to purchase them as well and pass them on to my son.  :salute

Correct Dan. If it had been any other nationality I would have pointed that out.

Masherbrum, if I wanted to take a dig at the Poles I would have said something like: 'well, it is a Polish Spit so what do you expect'.

Masherbrum I expect you've read "A Question of Honor" by Lynne Olson and Stanley Cloud, pretty much required reading for those interested in the Kosciuszko squadron from the BoB and beyond.  :aok
