The only objection I see as legitimate for the old overtime rules is teams may loose in OT without ever having possession of the ball
IMO Ot should go another quarter. then if no score. sudden death. At the very least each team should have at least one possession. With onside kicks dissallowed. which is probably more doable and preferable to playing an entire extra quarter.
The rules committees are like engineers and architects. They each tend to take something that has a simple solution and make it ten times more complex then it needs to be
To be totally honest, I like the idea of playing a full extra quarter. The problem w/ this is the players would probably complain just they are doing about going to an 18 game season.
If I could suggest something to the rules commitee, I would suggest something like each team has two possessions from the 40 yd line to score a TD. Then if still no winner, up to 2 sudden death FG attempts from say 50 yds. If one team makes the FG and the other team misses then you have a winner. If both teams make 2 FG in sudden death then it's a tie. But this is just my $.02
