Thought this might be helpful for those about to skin the solid colour KI-61's. In particular the two paragraphs I pointed out with the red arrows.

The latest beta has a revised Ki-61 default skin. Some items like the cockpit, gear and flap bays have had colours changed so anyone like Devil or FTJR who is skinning a Ki-61 and who is also not recreating those parts themselves might want to download it again.

Note though there seems to be a bug with both the beta skin viewer and game at the moment. When you download the default skin files using either it saves the ki61.bmp file in 32 bit format. You will need to drop it to 256 colours for the skin to display correctly in the viewer. If you are using Bright to do this I find you need to load and save it first in your graphics program and then run Bright.

Thanks Greebo.  :salute

And those pics are great, Lyric. The two with the pylon are great examples of what corroded aluminium looks like.

Wish I could find some more photos of this aircraft.
Seems to be something going on under the wing possibly paint peeling off showing a dark primer?

Too much of a leap. Note the big hole in the cowling as well. Could just be they are fixing the gun and oil/liquid spilled out or seeped through the panel. The missing intake on the cowling and the stain could/would be remedied before releasing the plane back into combat. Could be shadows playing on an old film stock. Could have been censored back then when rudimentary censorship methods were employed.

You can't use it as the basis for any real assumption with that photo alone. Nor could it really influence any skinning work. Too much of an abberation to take seriously other than to note it and move on.

All the rest are profiles I cant find photos for.

Not proof positive of these two profiles at least aircraft very similar in appearance.

Tail and nose obscured of the Ki-61 in the background the KI-100 aircraft have the same tail markings as the above profile.

This image has the bare metal KI-61.

Found this interesting profile with the red wing tips.

I have posted a few KI-84's with the red wing tips in this thread that served for home defense of Japan.  Have a partial photo of white wing tipped KI-61 first red one though.

I also have a partial image of this aircraft sadly the wing tip is knocked off in this image.

I would not trust that profile. The fuselage stripe is not in the right location either; should line up with the horizontal stabilizer.

Yes agreed stripe is in the wrong place profile is from 1971. Most profiles I have found have some basis of fact behind them some artists just create profiles out of thin air.

Would like to have seen more on these two wrecks though.

White wing tipped KI-61 & also a strange emblem on the tail that has been partially damaged or cut away. Looks like a horses head with a plane diving away from it.

Found this profile in a book from 2003 still keeping the red wing tips & continuing the red stripe along the entire aircraft.

Few pages away from the profile in the very same book a partial photo of the same aircraft.

 :headscratch:

Seems the old 70's profile at this point is far more accurate.
