Rammkommando or Sonderkommando "ELBE"
« on: September 13, 2010, 08:08:38 PM »
How's about a new style of attack?
The Rammkommando or Sonderkommando "ELBE." which in fact, they were not Japanese style kamikaze. Their task was to ram enemy plane and bail out just prior to the impact. But instead of dying on impact you survive, determening if you bail out in time.

There already is a style of attack like this. You simply achieve this by flying in a head-on pass to the middle bomber in the formation. Pull up into him and watch him go POOF! Trick is, you don't fire your guns, and you don't bail out when you ram him.  :D

Suggest you read "The Last Flight of the Luftwaffe-The Suicide Attack on the Eighth Air Force, 7 April 1945"  by Adrian Weir

Kind of a useless exercise on the part of the Luftwaffe.  One attempt to stop the 8th, lost far more then they shot down.

Seems like a waste of coding time based on the worthlessness of the effort.  120 planes up, many never found the bombers.  For possible 13 bombers out of 1200, they lost over 50 planes and 40 pilots killed.

I'd rather HTC modeled the Beaufighter :)

Read in a book once, describing the suicide attacks two Ki-44's madeon B-29's, and it said something like, trading a plane for a plane doesnt sound that bad, unless the enemy has more planes then you!

But aren't trucks more a multirole fighter?
they do a pretty good job of cars when they hit them
and bombing wise, well I sure wouldn't like to have a semi plough into my house....

i prefer 110s myself...

Anyways, just to correct the OP, they actually bailed out AFTER collision with the bombers. the cockpit was so reinforced that it nearly insured 100% safety of the pilot. but you also need to remember that most of the planes that flew in these flights didnt even make it to the bombers

worst idea ever. as it is half the planes you meet try to Ho/ram you, and you want to encourage that? :headscratch:

If I recall correctly one of the B17s that was rammed was able to land safely despite the heavy damage to the aircraft. So not only is it a waste of time but it's not even guaranteed to kill the bomber.

One time it was tried.  As I posted previously, they lost 50+ out of 120 planes with most not finding the bombers.  Gotta be better things for HTC to spend their time on for the game.
