CH F-16 Combatstick USB problems
« on: September 08, 2001, 10:53:00 PM »
I just got one of these yesterday (Thanks, RWY!), and I'm having some very odd problems installing it properly in Win98 (first edition, patched up to the latest in everything... DX8.0a installed).

I installed Controller Manager as per CH's instructions.  No problems there.  Within Controller Manager, I'm able to calibrate the joystick (that is, it tells me to move the stick to various extremes and press a button).  However, Gaming Options in Win98 fails to recognize the stick.  No matter what I've done, it simply refuses to admit that a USB Combatstick exists.  As such, games such as AH are unable to recognize it.

Earlier this evening, JCenter for both DOS and Windows recognized the stick.  Just now, it failed to do so.

Hm.

Any ideas/suggestions are appreciated.  :)

Exact same problem on my end.

I got a pro throttle & rudders (using them with my Logitech USB Joystick)

Anytime I use the Controller manager it sees the stick just fine (and I can map the mini joystick on the throttle can control the mouse just fine, etc.) but the 'virtual' joysticks I set up refuse to appear in the Gaming Options control panel.

ARGH. So much for USB's much ballyhooed 'ease of use'

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Heya, Cuber.   :)

And to all others (including Lemur... let me know if this is what you're running into as well), here's a graphical summary of what's going on at my end.  Apologies for the 188KB of pics to follow.

(1)  I installed Controller Manager as per CH's instructions.  Doing so led Windows 98 to recognize the USB Combatstick as belonging to the CH Products group of devices (see Pic 1).  Pic 2 shows that the Controller Manager properly displays as a System device.

(2)  Within Controller Manager, I'm able to calibrate the Combatstick (insofar as I can tell -- it accepts button presses from the joystick).

(3)  However, pics 4 and 5 demonstrate what happens when I go to Gaming Options.  Despite Win98 recognizing the stick as a system device, and despite being able to calibrate it within Controller Manager, I am unable to get Gaming Options to display it at all.  I'm also unable to Add the stick manually.  The USB Combatstick does not appear in Gaming Option's list of addable controllers, and attempting to add it by selecting "Add Other" yields a 2-axis, 2-button stick that is not detected.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.  :)

You have everything setup right, just need to tell the control manager that you want to add your combat stick to your virtual controller.

All you do is hit the button with the joystick with the + symbol next to it, then select combatstick in the window that pops up. hit ok.

now you see a graphical representaion of your stick, with all its buttons. this is werhe you can setup the buttons how you want them, change axis on the stick, etc.

then all you do is hit the activate current map button, and you'll see a ch control manager device in controllers in gameing devices.

if you have more sticks, throttle, pedals, etc from ch, add them to the control manager map.

once you have everything setup, save the map so you can load it and activate it before you play Aces, or whatever you wnat to play.

Don't have the time to get into more detail at the moment, but this shoudl help you out hopefully.

Also, dont do anything with the sticks in the windows controller window. everything is handled thru ch's program. you don't calibrate or anything thru windows (tho youreally dont need to calibrate at all, just move your sticks around before you get into aces).
