Disgusted
« on: October 01, 2010, 08:31:38 PM »
So I stop by the corner store for a few things this afternoon on my way home from work and a guy walks in behind me with his 5 to 7 year old (?) daughter.

Mistake number one.  She gets entranced by the cheap prettythanged toys on the rack at the front of the store and starts looking at them.  In the mean time he heads back to the beer coolers for his 24 pack of Coors Light.  Mmmmm okay we live in a relatively decent neighborhood but dude where's your head?  I realize I forgot sour cream so I break out of line and go back to the cooler to get it.  I know the owners and know their heads are on a swivel but my spine is crawling.

Get back in line behind 'dad' and notice 'daughter' is still looking at the shiny toys and kind of laugh to myself about what junk will entrance a child that young.  The clerk starts ringing 'dad' up and he puts $5 down on a quick pick for the lottery tonight.  His right okay.. no big.  Right about then the little girl perks up and says 'Bobby would LOVE this can we buy it for him pleeeease?'

Granted it's junk.. $2.99 for something that's not worth twenty five cents.  But come on dude.

'Dads' response?   Honey you know I can't afford that right now so don't ask me again..

Look at the total and it's $25 +

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?   You have one chance in a couple of MILLION of winning the lottery but rewarding a child who was thinking of someone else would cost you three bucks? One chance in maybe a couple of thousand to make a memory for your child? GRRRRRRR!!!!

I almost whipped out ye olde wallet but I didn't think that would be appropriate.

But, seriously dude, where is your head if not sniffing your lower intestine?

I hardly ever buy stuff for my kids just because they want them. They do work, get paid chore money & buy their own stuff.

For the first two years, I did... after that, they buy their own if it ain't birthday or Christmas gifts.

Although, if they ever ask for a book - I buy it almost immediately.  And if they ask for help in buying something to give to someone else, I almost always help with that.

State lotteries (also know as the "stupid tax") are immoral.

I could go on a long rant here but that would only get me  "see rule #14".

I get the same thing from my boys, every toy on the shelf would be ours if I caved. Typically the $2 toys have an attention span of 5 minutes.

Forgot who said this while trying to take a base, but the quote goes like this. "I cant help you with ack, Im not in attack mode" This is with only 2 ack up in the town while troops were there, waiting. The rest of the town was down.

Please don't pass judgment on someone after a minor encounter like that.

The kid was probably a banana anyway.

Edit: I didn't type banana, I typed ;banana;

Maybe the Father could have said it/meant it differently. We, as Parents/Grandparents(a lot anyways) DO overindulge our young ones.
Wife and I raised 3 Daughters youngest is 19. We often watch my 2 year old Granddaughter and have a Grandson due in December. I'm getting :old: lol.
We have SO much little toy junk at our home. Our little Granddaughter wants most everything she sees,
I try to give almost anything they want, because I grew up very poor, and I want my family to have what I could only dream of (including food).
We do have to say NO on occasion. This is one of those stories where I try not to judge, because I do not know the family, or their situation.
If the child looked in good health and looked not to be abused, then as a Parent, I can't say anything bad, even if I may disapprove.
My experience is. The best "Parents"(or so They believe don't have children. When/if they do finally have their own, views change dramatically.

i fully agree with this. it's the states finding a way to make people want to give up their hard earned money.
