^^^^^ This

I didn't want to say this in the original post because I have a lot of respect for people who work in the 'blue' collar world.  The little girl was clean, well dressed, and very polite.  Dad looked like he got poured out of a dumpster.  The young lady wasn't a snot ball but the part that got to me was she was looking at the boy stuff and wanted to get it for another child.

I considered ponying up for the toy but didn't want to intrude on 'dad' or look anymore like the creepy old guy.

And, for the record, my total was $13...  :P

Oh man how many times have I seen that type of parent out there and had to bite my tongue.

On another note, I will save this one for another day but if the subject ever comes up I will tell you how I am practically raising my daughters best friend since the parents have the same mentality as this;  its sad but in some peoples eyes, children do not come first in their lives..........

hard to know what the real story was.  for all we know.. dad knew that "Bobby" was actually her imaginary friend (ie: the toy was for her)   ..and/or mom already bought that for her and was saving it for her birthday.

you just never know in those kind of situations......and unless I see a child in imminent harm...or potentially imminent harm......I just won't step in.

I wouldn't say or do anything simply because the way the world is anymore, if you hold a door for a kid or try to be nice to them in any way, you are almost immediately dragged off to court as a child molester. It ain't worth it.

And as for the 'stupid tax', that's the point- if you're stupid enough to buy them, you didn't deserve that $2 anyway.
Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

Treize69 .. so true.

so much so...that if a kid get's onto an elevator....and it's just me...I get off the elevator.  same with a rest room.  there is a very litigious mindset out there to earn a fast buck...and too many parents are all too happy to make their kids the actors in the plots.

oh trust me I didn't say or do anything I was just nonplussed by the whole situation.  Granted I don't 'know' everything that's going on in their lives but, on the surface, I was like.. 'd$@n dude'...

You can't or should not be expected to buy everything a kid wants. That could have been an excuse. And some of you need to take a step of your pedestal. Calling people stupid for buying lotto tickets is one of the more elitist things I have seen posted. I have bought a singe number here and there knowing full well the odds are stacked way against me but its still fun. As for being immoral all I have to say is  :rofl If you're taking the religious outlook on it being immoral "Tho shall not judge lest thy be judged."

In this day and age, a child who thinks of someone else before themselves is a good kid. As for dad, well, the lotto ticket was probably going to pay his mortgage and the case of beer is going to allow him to forget that he can't pay his mortgage. Still, no excuse.

And yes, I have children. And no, I'm not filthy rich.

So I stop by the corner store for a few things this afternoon on my way home from work and a guy walks in behind me with his 5 to 7 year old (?) daughter.

Mistake number one.  She gets entranced by the cheap prettythanged toys on the rack at the front of the store and starts looking at them.  In the mean time he heads back to the beer coolers for his 24 pack of Coors Light.  Mmmmm okay we live in a relatively decent neighborhood but dude where's your head?  I realize I forgot sour cream so I break out of line and go back to the cooler to get it.  I know the owners and know their heads are on a swivel but my spine is crawling.

Get back in line behind 'dad' and notice 'daughter' is still looking at the shiny toys and kind of laugh to myself about what junk will entrance a child that young.  The clerk starts ringing 'dad' up and he puts $5 down on a quick pick for the lottery tonight.  His right okay.. no big.  Right about then the little girl perks up and says 'Bobby would LOVE this can we buy it for him pleeeease?'

Granted it's junk.. $2.99 for something that's not worth twenty five cents.  But come on dude.

'Dads' response?   Honey you know I can't afford that right now so don't ask me again..

Look at the total and it's $25 +

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?   You have one chance in a couple of MILLION of winning the lottery but rewarding a child who was thinking of someone else would cost you three bucks? One chance in maybe a couple of thousand to make a memory for your child? GRRRRRRR!!!!

I almost whipped out ye olde wallet but I didn't think that would be appropriate.

But, seriously dude, where is your head if not sniffing your lower intestine?

You dont have any daughters do you?

If I bought my daughter something every time she asked me to. I'd be able to open not just one, but my own chain of toy stores.
I've used the "dont have the money/cant afford" excuse plenty. Its easier then arguing with a 7 year old girl and listening to the whining.

Remember. When your dealing with little girls. Your dealing with miniature women. And very time you go out they think its to get them something.
I am convinced that women are from birth ingrained with some sort of screwball gene that causes them to instinctively seek ways to part men with their money over nonsensical and often not needed things. And with little girls just like their full grown counterparts. Their great idea usually becomes your headache.

Matter of fact sometimes I feel like I have two wives.

Men are like dogs. When we are young we are like puppies that eventually grow into a dog.
Women are like cats. It doesnt take them but long enough to be able to walk before they can slice and dice you.

Men start off as boys and eventually become men.

Women like cats. Are women right out of the box. And it doesnt take them but to learn how to talk before they start wanting and expecting crap
