resetting sound
« on: October 04, 2010, 04:32:05 PM »
seems like every 3 minutes or so, I have to do the old .resetv command.  It doesnt matter what sounds I am using...stock or any others..all the same.  At first I thought it was because I was streaming XM radio while game was on, but it does it even without?  other games sounds are fine, only AH.  The sound in AH never really cuts out, just the small things like wind noise, my own engine.  Guns and vox and hits and explosions remain.

any ideas?

Too many sounds playing at one time will cause it, if you are talking about general game sounds.  Voice loss would most probably be due to packet loss on the Internet connection.

I used to stream XM into my machine and realized it was affecting AH sounds when odd things happened, and this was with a dedicated sound card.

You must have an external XM device, you're far better running a wire from the device to the aux in port on the sound card to decrease the load on the computer. Running the native XM sound panel or even a widget will bite into Aces High, no matter how fast your system is.

As for your sounds overall, I have no clue.

Could be a configuration issue with the sound card.  When you run another sound application, at the same time as the game, it is not beyond the realm of possibilities the sound card configuration could get messed up.

Two different applications wanting to use the card in two different ways is a recipe for wrecking the configuration.

It still does it even when not streaming XM, when only AH is running.

Did you check your sound card configuration in Windows?  Did you check the device being used for sounds in the games Options->Preferences->Game Sounds?

That it matches the actual speaker configuration and that nothing is being applied to the sounds to alter the sounds, such as EAX, Dolby,....

If you are using custom sounds packs, get rid of them!  Some of the custom sound packs have switched to stereo sounds which could definately cause issues for sounds that are not supposed to be stereo.

Skuzzy, Jolly is using my new pack (he's a squaddie & friend) and the sounds that he says he is losing were done in 22KHz 8-bit mono, to keep file size small.  I only used stereo on some engine start-ups (which work for him).  Could that really be the problem?  No one else has reported this problem, so I'd like to know "just in case".

I still say it's too much man porn on Jolly's PC.

Every computer will be different.  Using mono sounds assures everything will work as that is the lowest common denominator.  It solves a lot of compatibility issues with other sound apps that might be playing at the same time.

It also might just solve these random crashes to desktop as well.

Some of the custom sound packs have switched to stereo sounds which could definately cause issues for sounds that are not supposed to be stereo.

Ive been wondering about this - surely all of the sounds should be mono since AH locates them in the virtual 3D world, then directx/soundcard dictates how they are represented on the playback device (ie. stereo headphones, 5.1 system etc.)?

btw One of my squaddies has had problems with AH crashing since installing one of the stereo soundpacks. reverting to mono sounds resolved it.

It's like anything else, if your computer doesn't have the b@lls to run it, it WILL cause problems. Skuzzy has said it before they went to stereo that the custom sound pack take more  to run. Now your asking your computer to not only run a custom sound, your asking it to run in stereo.

I don't think Jolly's issue is the same as your squadmates. Your squadmates computer might be on the "lower" end of those computers running the game and the custom sound just push it over the edge. Much like someone running the hirez package and having issues.

Sound is screwy on computers. I have run into a number of problems trying sound programs and finding out they don't play well with other sound programs. I'm thinking that is where jollys problem might be too, one of his sound programs isn't playing well with another one. Trouble is finding.
