I did the Yankee Modelworks resin kit years ago. Hopefully its not uber-expensive.

Buster, it's more about patience and care than it is know how in my experience.  If you start with some simpler and cheaper kits, and do a bit of reading on a couple of good websites and you'll be there man.  If you go slow and carefully you will amaze yourself on what you can do.  You probably wouldn't find yourself wanting to start modding it since you hadn't been building for a long time, and Hase make really good quality models that look great right out of the box.  Buy a couple of cheap but decent kits (look for Hobby Lobby to have a 50% or more off sale and get some Tamiya or Hasegawa 1/48 kits cheap) and build them straight out of the box by the instructions.  You'll even impress yourself and find a wonderful and rewarding new hobby.  I  love modeling.

Doesn't even really cost too much, until later when you realize you really really want a silent compressor and an airbrush that is way more than you need for modeling.  With some basic equipment, some sprue nippers and an xacto knife with several extra blades, some fine grades of sand paper, future floor wax and some Tenax7R or another plastic welder (not the old school tube cement btw) and superglue, you can do wonders.  Really less than 50 bucks all told you can get a good start.

Which one Saxman? I'm working on 1/32 F2G conversion and an F4U-3 with the Biermann supercharger.

The only decent 1/32 Hog kits I see anywhere are the Trumpeter ones (I won't touch that Revel POS, tried building one once. HORRIBLE kit). Hasegawa and Tamiya don't seem to offer one; or if they do, not on Hobby Link Japan. I've already got an after-market engine and cockpit. I've been wanting to mod the Trumpeter 1D into a 1A and try some scratch-building for an accurate exhaust system and firewall mount, as well as an accurate rear landing gear strut and bay, with internal bulkheads and maybe even run "control lines" in the interior of the aft section. Got some nice cutaways, although I'm still having problems finding a good reference for the firewall and exhaust collection system. Maybe even actually MODEL the fabric surfaces....
