Troubleshooting Ideas - Frame Rate Hit After Reboot
« on: October 15, 2010, 10:17:55 AM »
I had a power spike yesterday morning, and my PC rebooted, which tells me my UPS is dead...anyways.

When I went to play AH last night, my frame rates were consistently 10-20 FPS lower than normal, which is usually the monitor's refresh rate of 76.  The night before this happened, everything was running smooth and consistent.

I noticed some Windows Updates installed security patches yesterday, so I removed all of those, defragged, and made sure there weren't any active processes taking up HDD I/O or CPU cycles more so than any other night, but yet performance lagged and I consistently had low FPS when flying.

I tried offline and online -- same result of lower FPS and stuttering gameplay as soon as I went into a plane.

I reinstalled the vid drivers over themselves, so the next step, I think, is doing a driver sweep and reinstalling them fresh.

However, is it possible that the spike damaged my PSU or GPU, and it's only showing up when I launch the game?  I've never had a partially damaged piece of hardware -- it's usually working or broken.

Is it possible to test this?

Vid Card is an Asus 5850.  PSU is a Corsair 750TX.

I started running 3dMark06 this morning, but I had to leave for work, so I'll see results when I get home to compare to past benchmarks.

The only other thing I can think of is some type of corruption in the OS, and I can reinstall Windows.

Any thoughts or advice on troubleshooting the PSU would be greatly appreciated. :)

Thanks,

mir

I'm almost useless to help you but did you install any software when you got your UPS?

I remember years ago I had one that died and I removed it from the system. The problem was the monitoring software that came with it continued to try and find the UPS and it made my system act up.

I did Del, so I'll look at that.  Thanks for thinking of that.
