Fix for W98 . vxd related Instability
« on: January 26, 2001, 12:41:00 PM »

I was having problems with lockups and fatal exception errors that mentioned ".vxd" ...and while trying to find out about it I stumbled on this fix. My computer has been running with it for over a week with no problems,no blue screens, freezes or instability. It might be worth a try if you are experiencing the same instability.

The bottom line seems to be that, for the sake of a little faster loading, all the .vxd files in W98 were combined into one monster sized vxd file that is called up whenever an individual .vxd is needed. Apparently this sometimes causes instabilty. The fix simply separates the huge vxd file into each individual vxd and avoids the problem. I havn't seen any downside.

My system:

Asus CUV4X
P3 700e @ 869mhz
Windows 98 SE
256 mb Mushkin 133mhz ram
20+gig Western Digital 7200 rpm, ata66mhz
Diamond TNT Ultra
Diamond Monster M-80 sound card

I'd bet you dollars to doughnuts that problem is related to non-Win98 compliant drivers for the M-80.

Good tip though, thanks.
