Hope this is just saber rattling by N Korea. As Korean war vets have said, its a nasty place to fight.

This sounds awfully like the Balkans of World War I, and man, could it end badly.  Look, we've got our two little hotbed countries (North and South Korea), with big allies.  As time wears on, tensions rise, and if a Kim-Jong gets assasinated, it'll all blow up.  I don't like the looks of this one bit.

Any invasion to the continental US would be thwarted by the beautiful, buxom, Amazonian coastal women we gots. They wouldn't get a mile inland (save for the karaoke bars) before they imploded.

Never get involved in a land war in Asia.  Like all good advice, difficult to follow.

The Chinese are pressing hard for talks, and the U.N. is pulling out the checkbook.

The U.S. and S.Korea are engaged in a 4 day joint naval exercise. Provided nothing happens in these 4 days, I think this may blow over. I hope so anyway.

With all that has happened in the Middle East?  I get the feeling that, should the Korea's start fighting again, the people will say, "Don't get involved...", "Get our troops out of there...".  Believe me, I hope I'm wrong.  I sure hope that the reaction will be, "Get in there and kick some arse!  Help South Korea!".

+1 on that.  Personally know two that said it was hell.  One Marine who BBQ them and a U.S.A.F fighter pilot who shot down four of them.  It will be interesting to see what kind of "puppet master" role China play.

One thing I'm curious about is the economic competition aspect between SK and China - ie would China benefit from an economic disruption to SK (SK manufacturing vs chinese).

Regarding where our nukes are pointed: from what I understand, they are now pointed at the ocean as a safeguard against accidents. Keeping them locked on specific targets ended with the cold war, and despite NK's issues, things still aren't as stressed between the big 3 as they were in the 70's.

In a conventional war, China has the upper hand in therms of numbers.  While the US could invoke a draft, and China will invoke a draft, the US citizen would pitch a fit while the Chinese Citizen will join (willing or not).  Their army doubles or triples practically overnight.  China will not easily get within invasion range of the US though.  There are several bases between us and them, not to mention that we have more than a few submarines and aircraft carriers as well as a decent amount of air power.  For China to come within invasion range, they will have badly cripple or destroy the Navy and Air Force and take control of the Pacific.  That's a lot of water to cover you know. :D

Well, the chinese did park their submarine in the middle of US carrier convoy and bullied them by surfacing there...
