Any Voodoo5500 owners tried DX8.1?
« on: December 13, 2001, 06:36:00 PM »
Currently running DX8.0. Been hearing good things about 8.1 but unsure about going to it. I don't mind a reinstall of OS but if anyone has had success already, I may chance it.

It certainly didn't cause any problems. I saw little or no fps gains in AH, but it has resulted in fewer stutters in some other games plauged with that problem.

Im running FSAA x2 but even lower, I only saw mid 20s for FPS.  I have no idea why my FPS is half yours.  Win2K was a great improvement here, its using all the RAM.  According to everything I've read, Windows 98/98SE won't effetively utilize more than 190mb.  I bet you'd get a real boost with Win2k or XP with all that RAM

Go HERE for a full list of 3RD Party 3DFX files and drivers, most are reviewed by users.

Some of them appear to be quite good according to users reviews.

Average 17 to 25FPS

I have a Voodoo 3, 3000 PCI card  :( w/a 3rd party drivers ( from the site mention above) and I'm getting a Average of 35 to 45FPS. (In smoke it drops down to as low as 12FPS) Also I'm running a 56K V90 modem way out in the country where the phone lines suck. Only getting 26400bps on a good day  :(. I'm looking into getting a Voodoo 5,5500 AGP card for around $50.00. (I'm on a tight budget right now). Would you guys with the Voodoo 5.5000 recommend this or wait?
Also, is an External modem better for gaming?

Thanks

My system will run AH at 75 FPS max (due to VSync) and will average out at 50 FPS. I have the x3dfx 3rd Party Drivers installed. GET THIS DRIVER!! (Here's the website. It's called VoodooFiles.com  Bookmark this site, it will be your ultimate 3d card friend.) This driver allows you to completely manipulate Direct3D and OpenGL/Glide. For instance, you can turn off VSync, FORCE TRIPLE BUFFER (The ultimate option which gives the 50-60 FPS average), pixel-blending, etc.
Here's the hardware and software I'm running for Aces High:

Compaq Presario (some number)
Windows Mellenium Edition
Pentium III (1 GHz)
2 Hard Drives: 1st- 60 GB, 2nd- 15 GB
Voodoo 5 5500 PCI
128 MB RAM
(Edited part) DX 8.1
(Another Edited part  :p ) Resolution: 1024x768x32

Hope that driver helps you out. It sure did for me.    ;)

(Edited message because I forgot to add one last thing.)
I forgot to mention that I installed DirectX 8.1 and I didn't notice anything different. It could be me or it really didn't change anything. I would just get it in case another application benefits from it.   :)

I installed the x3DFX drivers as well.  I haven't tried the tweaks you mentioned but I'm still only seeing hi-teens with the occassional blast to 24fps.

I see there is an overclock option in the x3dfx drivers...what should I crank her up to?  200mhz?

Using the 3rd party drivers for V5 5500, I get a strange video effect- when playing either Il-2(OpenGL mode) or Operation Flashpoint (GLIDE mode), I get strange horizontal bars across my screen.

One bar is darker than the other (or you could say one is lighter, either way), and they are a little less than a half inch thick but run the entire way across my screen.

Have any of you guys seen this? In Aces High I do not get this, and in UnReal running in GLIDE I do not see this either... I'll try other games and report back, but if you know the fix please post it here!

Thanks!
EDIT:

Okay, here's the deal- it does it in all my OpenGL/GLIDE games EXCEPT UnReal.

However, when I tried to take a screenshot- it game out perfectly clear- inside of the screenshot directory.

BUT- when I do "paste as new image"- well honestly it's a "see to believe" kind of thing.

If you want the screenshots (the good one and the fugged up one), I can email 'em to you... it leads me to believe the refresh rate is screwed up (maybe) but when I try to force it to 60Hz, it doesn't matter.

Anyone got any ideas?

Those of you getting low frame-rates should turn ground clutter off.

To SWulfe: See if the VSync is turned off. That could be your problem because is what might be happening is that the Voodoo is displaying as many rendered frames as it can without worrying about the refresh rate of your monitor. In other words it tears or makes wierd screens. See if this is the problem, I think the driver settings are in the Display Properties, then Settings, then Advanced. Then you should see a tab in the 2nd row and it says Advanced Settings. Click it and you should see a list with "+"s and next to them it says Direct3D and OpenGL. Expand the OpenGL section and see if the VSync is turned off and if it is, set it to Software Controlled. Hope it helps.

To LePaul: Same for you, the overclocker should also be in Display Properties, then Settings, then Advanced. In the last row of tabs it should say 3dfx Overclocker. I must warn you though that it has caused problems in my system and in Aces High when i set it to anything above 166MHz.  :( BE CAREFUL!! Good luck to you. If I were you though, I would just leave it alone but if you have anything but Windows ME then go ahead and set it up at max 180 first. Then go little by little on testing.

I hope this helps you guys out.   :D
Good luck and talk to you later.
