For the X52 guys
« on: November 28, 2010, 02:38:37 PM »
After reading a couple of the threads here in the past week or two and looking at this link in one http://www.mektek.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=139226 I decided to give it a go.

I have been having stick issue for a few months now and thought I had nothing to lose by trying this as if it didn't work and I destroyed my stick I would need to replace it anyway..

I started by following the instructions in the link (I have two sticks..one that is used for parts) I decided I would try 1 axis first.. What I found is that yes you get instant movement but when I got to 3/4 of the sticks movement range the Hall sensor would loose contact with the field and jump back to center..after spiking to the opposite direction. (this may be ok if you have done the mod with the plastic disc to spring as it cuts down the stick full movement)
After finding this I decided to put the old bracket back in and use one magnet (remembering I have spares) stuck directly below as in the link...I now have three magnets (one each side and the middle one) this helped the spiking back to center and the stick was very sensitive.

While I was doing all this I dropped a magnet close to one of the brackets and it placed itself on the outside which gave me the idea to place a magnet each side...so now I have four magnets on one bracket. Now I had an axis set up with three magnets (manget either side and one below hall sensor) and one axis set up with four magnets (two either side of the hall sensor)

I flew with this..hahaha if you can call it that..... Both ways made the stick move sensitive but I found the axis with the three magnet set up harder to scale.

My findings over a few hours of game time this weekend

The way set out in the link works (for stick sensitivity) but there is quite a bit of mucking about to get it in place and centered (not alot but still) and the stick movement would require so form of adjustment.
Using the bracket installed in the stick and adding a magnet in the center under the hall sensor fixed the issue with stick range and spiking back but as for above required a bit of mucking around.

Adding a magnet to either side of the bracket installed was easy (just drop the magnet close to the other and it did all the work for you) gave good sensitivity and was easier to scale back
( I am ham fisted and with this instant movement I was really over doing things)

I am still testing this new set up and now have both axis set up with the four magnets...I am getting close to being scaled to my way of using the stick but it was a very frustrating time had doing it...If you plan to try these things expect to die...and get in there, as just flying about will not give you the feed back you need for your adjustments as I find anybody can fly about and keep things good but during a good fight you will be concentrating on other things and your hand will not be one of them.

So all in all...the extra sensitivity has allowed me to add a little dead band to help with a little centering issue I have with my stick.  On inspection though I think this issue is with the plastic seat at the base of the spring more than the sensors...
But the sensitivity is better..no dead stick movement.

Please remember this is what I have found for my own personal set up and don't have anything substantial to back my findings.. I just thought it could be of some use to some of you and could offer an easy unobtrusive way for you all to trial
I have no Idea if any type of small magnet would do the job but if you have a spare stick you may find it a viable test for yourself.

I did mod last month, used a square of double sided tape(thick tape) from £1 shop.
thick tape allowed for one magnet and ease of alignment, the tape's thickness positioned the magnet very close to the sensor.

magnet is positioned directly under sensor, i don't know why original set up has two on either side of sensor?

i suppose once its set up a spot of super glue would help as well

Will this help with a nose bounce issue?  I've tried all manner of scaling and none at all.  When I pull for a shot, the nose bounces instead of smoothly moving where I want it to.

Just did the mod and it was even easier than it looks.  Thin double sided tape puts the stacked magnets nice and close to the sensor. On my stick, the side of the magnet with the red stripe faces the sensor.  Tried it the other way and values were reversed.  Easy to change though.  Bouncing issue from X and Y axes is gone and stick seems much more responsive.  Maybe now I will actually hit what I aim at.

Thank you for posting this.  :salute

if your happy with position of magnets little spot if super glue is recomended, magnets could get loose if tape gets warm :old: :joystick:

Other hint is to make the plugs slightly oval so they don't work loose from back of throttle and stick :old:

Tie backs on spring also to reduce pressure of spring :old:

There a thread ti increase pressure of spring as well

when i had my x52 I got rid of bouncing by having no deadband.  took a while to get used to it. but I like the fact that could do some really minor adjustments when i would fly the il2.

This wasn't a deadband issue in my case.  I didn't move the deadband at all and this mod cured my nose bouncing.

Didn't have super glue but will grab some for when the magnet takes a walk.  Made a homemade spring spacer which about doubles the spring tension in the stick.  Feels about equal to the rudder tension.  It returns to center nicely and is a big help.

Now if anyone knows how to decrease the spring tension in the rudder,  the stick would be perfect.  :pray

No biggie, you were just offering help.   :salute

BTW, if you have any other functional joysticks that you are giving away, let me know.
If you have pedals, you can save Zack $100.  :)

Wow, that's a nice insurance package.  I keep an N64 joystick just in case the X-52 ever craps out.

So, when can I expect my free pedals?  :D
