"Hunting" with dogs is not illegal in most areas of the US; in fact it is the way that nearly wiped out the Whitetail population in the Southeastern US in the early half of the 1900's. However it is not the way that I hunt and I regularly turn down opportunities to go sit "on stand" as its called while deer are flushed/herded towards the hunters by the dogs. However where I stalk hunt I don't mind popping a cap in a deer that runs through my land with dogs chasing it; just because I can take away from those hunters when it runs onto my land.

Most if not all of the local hunters around my land do not use dogs now. The ones that do are the guys who come in from out of state or from the northern part of Alabama. We tend to make them unwelcome since they don't add anything to the experience in the area and are only there to kill any and all deer without regard for trying to do things to keep the population in balance and healthy.

I must say.  I never heard of anybody that uses dogs to flush out deer.

Never been to NC then I take it? Happens every year. It may be that I simply don't like hunting, but I'm glad to be leaving this area soon. It's not that I hate hunters (some great people hunt), I hate mentality of hunters around here (and those that share it).

That bolded statement there is why the people around my parents here in central Alabama don't like or help the outsiders that come in to hunt in the area and start leasing/buying up all the property around the area.

Last week of deer season here.  It closes for a week or two Sunday night then opens back up for two weeks.

While we're on the topic of deer hunting, someone give me their opinion on this question:

In Tennessee, we are not allowed to kill antlerless deer except during archery (early season), Muzzleloader (pre-rut), and the second open Rifle Season (late/post-rut).  [Exceptions:  Special hunts, tags, and license].  Would it not make more sense to make the final rifle season that occurs in late December/early January a "buck only" season?  What's the point of killing a doe that late in the season and taking the risk of killing a deer that might have been bred?

In my opinion, the only time you should be able to kill does until the opening day of Rifle season (which is always the Saturday before Thanksgiving and runs for two weeks [Prime time of the rut here in TN], then closes for a week, then reopens).  What are your opinions?

How do they use dogs to flush them out?  You do mean for deer, right.

Around here by January, many deer have already dropped their antlers (PA) I think with that being the case, Buck/Doe ID would be tough. I never saw much sence in the late season myself, have to agree with you Banshee, just seems stupid. Our season (Rifle)starts the first monday after Tgiving, and seems to work out well, but its well after thr rut, which around here seems to be mid to late Oct

I don't like that last part post rut...but in the defense of the Fish and Wildlife people I think their biologists probably do a good job of knowing and monitoring the hunts and the numbers.

Here in Alabama primitive weapon (bow, muzzle loader, spear, etc...) season for deer opens up on Oct 15 and goes till Jan 31. Rifle and Shotgun hunting opens up on Nov 15 and goes until Jan 31.

Here is an excerpt from the rules for Alabama which can be found in this pdf document http://www.outdooralabama.com/images/file/2010-11%20S&BL%20final%20as%20appr%20by%20CAB%20web%20version.pdf

Camouflage vehicles come out of the woodwork

The local radio station plays the Thirty Point Buck song over and over again.

The neighbor who you hear from only once a year calls to say they’re going to hunt in that same spot again—permission is presumed just because you gave it last year

You see trucks parked in lots of out of the way places, but no teenagers are making out inside

Blaze orange is the must have color

You don't see the "King of the Forrest" where he's been every morning for the past 2 months.

Good hunting, and let’s be careful out there. I would love to know what other signs of the season you've seen this week.

Don't forget the red neck game wardens you see hiding behind evey tree . Let me check you gun son , quote : your not my father and you just checked my gun yesterday and yeah those are my dog's , squeak ! Setting on my sack of corn ...Let me add , when they take my dog's I will quit hunting .

Yep, really sad, this happened in Richland Township (Quakertown) I live about 15mins from where it happened. I use to hunt that same farm as a kid, but havent in about 15 or 20+years. Its being investigated as a homicide. Just really sad, and a bit to close to home

Yes this was very close to home so close that I was the Paramedic on scene for this Call and I feel bad for the family. Not a good start to anyones week for work.
