Well, you can tell things have been busy around here.... just now swapped the GeF2GTS into the Athlon box. LOL, it only took 3 weeks to get back to it!

In EXACTLY the same box, the GeF2GTS put up 3033 for a score where the GeF2MX 100/200 (ASUS 7100) scored 1337.

With the same GeF2GTS card, the old O/C Celeron @ 850 scored 2408. Jumping the CPU to the AMD XP 1400 scored 3033.

The systems are alike in RAM, soundcard, etc.

The CPU's, MB's and Video Cards are the major differences.

Now to look at the old 850 with the ASUS in it.

Here's the result of replacing the GeF2GTS with the GeF2MX card in the Cel 850. Nothing else changed in the box and the cars are using the same Nvidia drivers.

Project Name Cel850/GeF2MX

Operating System Microsoft Windows 98
DirectX Version 8.00

Mobo Manufacturer
Mobo Model i440BX-W83977

CPU Intel Celeron 852 Mhz
FSB 100 MHz

3D Accelerator NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 100/200
Graphics Chipset NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 100/200
Driver Version 4.13.01.2183
Video Memory 0 MB

Resolution 1024x768 32bit
Texture Format Compressed
FSAA Disabled
Z-Buffer Depth 32bit
Frame Buffer Double
Rendering Pipeline D3D Hardware T&L

 3DMark Result 1191 3D marks

Game 1 Car Chase - Low Detail 21.6 FPS
Game 1 Car Chase - High Detail 8.9 FPS
Game 2 Dragothic - Low Detail 19.0 FPS
Game 2 Dragothic - High Detail 9.9 FPS
Game 3 Lobby - Low Detail 18.5 FPS
Game 3 Lobby - High Detail 11.2 FPS
Game 4 Nature N/A FPS

Fill Rate (Single-Texturing) 74.0 MTexels/s
Fill Rate (Multi-Texturing) 146.0 MTexels/s

High Polygon Count (1 light) 10.4 MTriangles/s
High Polygon Count (8 lights) 2.4 MTriangles/s

Environment Bump Mapping N/A FPS
DOT3 Bump Mapping 11.8 FPS

Vertex Shader Speed 17.5 FPS
Pixel Shader Speed N/A FPS
Point Sprite Speed 3.3 MSprites/s

This box scored 2408 with the GeF2GTS and dropped to 1191 when that vid card was replaced with the GeF2MX.

Interestingly, the Cel 850 did almost as well as the AMD XP 1400 with the same MX card. 1191 versus 1337. Obviously, it was the card not the CPU that was limiting the score.

Replaced my GF3 Ti500 with my old GeForce 256 SDR back in to see what it would get.  Nothing else changed in my system (1.4GHz Athlon).  3dmark went from 6160 to 1610.

Anybody got a Radeon 8500 they can post results for?

I just thought I'd mention to you guys that 3dMark 2001 is IMO a miserable benchmark, as the ONLY video card fully supported in the "Nature" portion is the GF 3.  If you don't have a GF 3 the "Nature" test WILL NOT RUN, meaning you lose over 40% of your possible score.

This makes the benchmark useless for the most part for comparing systems, as only GF 3 cards can score over 5000.  It also means non-GF3 systems get very low scores that are totally video card limited.  (That's why 900 Mhz systems are scoring almost the same as 1.6 Ghz systems.)

On the other hand, 3dMark2000 is a very good benchmark that supports all video cards.  I'd suggest you use that to compare systems.  3dMark2001 only is useful if you have a GF 3 PERIOD.

Oh, one HUGE performance boosting tweak (at least benchmark wise) on VIA chipset boards using a GeForce 3 is to switch the AGP Aperature to 128 MB versus 64 MB.

Good point on the 3dMark2001 vs 2000 versions.

As far as the AGP aperature, my experience with 128MB vs 64MB is I lost 10 points on my 3dMark2001 with my Ti500 and Abit KT7a.  Strange.

Problem with 3Dmark2000 is that it does not support all the features.

Instead, people could post up 3dmark 2001 results which are without nature and and those that one other which gives nice bunch of scores for high end cards.

I have that card in my pc now , waiting for my new Asus Ti 500 to come in . The ATI DDR was having problems in AH smoke .

I now get a score of "2089" with (1.4GHz Athlon) , driver 21.83 , settings on pc set to best image guality .

This setup is getting 84 fps in AH at most times , 1024 / 768 32bit . Refresh rate is 85 .

Another thing I noticed , with the card set to lesser guality settings wasn't seeing some gv's as fast as my bro's or some dots either , with this card as compared to my ATI v card . But with the higher setting I don't seem to have this problem anymore . ( Thats a "good" thing , hehe )

Edit > Ok with my agp size is changed to 128 with this score above . I checked for my old score with the agp size at 64 was 2083 .

thanks all for the tips and tricks

Just another update MB to an Abit KR7a-Raid 256 PC2100 memory and a XP1500 cpu.

Gonna post 3 CPU speeds so apologies long post, the cpu is an XP1500 which i have modified to unlock the multiplier, so far it runs at XP1900 speeds with standard fsb of 133 so no cooking of ancillary equipment at standard cpu voltage of 1.75 V.

No Vid card oc.

Setup as an XP1900 windows runs + loads without errors, 3Dmark 2K1 completes with no errors full test and Prime 95 completes with no errors, every reason to assume it will go faster still but i dont think my heart could stand the risk    :)
Boy was that XP1500 cpu a helluva bargain    :)
