spit 8 and 9
Yeah even an average pilot can fly those things effectively. Especially the 8. I can outclimb the 1, 5 and the 9, outscissor the 16, simply outmaneuver the 14, but the 8 is just unstoppable.

The best Spitfire in my opinion is the one with a 109 on his tail.

The Spit XIV is great fun when flown according to the historical pilots notes, with particular attention to boost settings:
- bottom tank for takeoff
- maximum of +7 boost to avoid tire wear :-) on takeoff
- +12 boost up to 1000 feet, then set to +9.
- at 2000 feet switch to external tank
- +9 boost in the climb to prefered altitude, fly at 12k-17k or 21k+, as  between about 19-21000 feet the supercharger will need to change gears (boost pressure drops rapidlyaround 20k)
- continuous power i.e. flying level, set to +7 boost
- if you need to conserve fuel, set +7 boost and lower the RPM until a stable 200 mph cruise.
- avoid full boost (+12) unless in combat and dont use WEP for more than a few minutes at a time (+18 boost chews the fuel and overheats the motor quickly)

Using the above settings, I have flown for a very long time, long enough to escort bombers on the climb, engage interceptors, return to formation and escort them home. Seemed like an hour.

sounds about right! :aok

outscissor the 16

Everything else being equal, 8 will never out-scissor 16

8 has larger wing area, slower stall speed. So i think it can outscissor the 16 (not outroll, but overshoot, like a corsair). Im a 109 g-6 pilot, and i can beat the 16 is scissors, but the 8/9 is pretty much a harder nut.

8 is also heavier few 100s lbs (empty weight). From my own tests, stall speed is about the same (2-3mph error)

That's probably due to special circumstances like pilot skill, loads, etc.

Mk VIII can't out-scissor Mk XVI if everything else is equal.

you were able to because the spit retains e better, thus you dumped your e faster without realizing it, and the spit pulled in front.

That was my goal, to dump energy as fast as possible, and overshoot the spit. Being careful, not to be roped though. I found that it is the best tactic against spits, overshoot in scissors as the g-6 cant outturn, outroll, or outclimb them. Im a nooblet tho, i may be wrong.

16 and 9. But the 9 owns 16 all day long in a turn fight.
spit 1 is a fun little plane. Its like riding around on a big wheel throwing rocks at passing cars. Does nothing more than piss them off. But its fun to see their reaction

The trick is to get them to fight rolling to the left. In a 109, you can use the engine to roll and do it at or below stall speeds.. giving you a very tight turn at the top. you can also kick right rudder, pull back on the stick some and yaw the plane as its stalling, kinda like a controlled flat spin, which will allow you to change your noses placement like nothing else (WARNING: it blows e like nothing else too). It becomes impossible though when there are more than one con fighting you, esp if the rest are taking turns trying to pick you because when you get slow, your prime meat for pickers. Your better off in a g14/k4, at least then you have some speed adv over the spits and instead setup reversals, go for the snapshot, then extend, never getting too slow.

Sounds like you guys have very hard time with spitfires  :neener:
