Why DO people hate Bill Gates?
« on: February 15, 2001, 11:02:00 AM »
Here's a man who's given MILLIONS of his wealth away, countless libraries built in various states, just donated 100 million dollars to the research of A.I.D.S.

I admire this man, he's also stated that he plans to give a good portion of his wealth to charities when he passes....

Not quite, but when you're that rich, what does it matter?  The folks that benefit from this could give a crap what percentage of his earnings it was...

Contribute something to society like Gates has, you may get one.  Warning: You'll have to earn it though.

Why do they hate him?

Envy.

He's followed the American dream, started with nothing and sits on a huge empire of success, hard work and wise decisions.

You either hate him or love him.

I think he's done more good than harm.

Next time use the   smilely, the   interprets a different attitude, a *wink* smilely says "I'm just joking"  But, you did address the widespread problem with Americans!

Actually, I am on a crusade to paint Bill a better image, since I'm invested in his company since 1992, and I'd like to retire next year instead of 14 years from now! (Come on baby, split 4 more times, I'm OUTTA here!)

I do not normally get into these type discussions ... that said ...

I also admire Bill Gates for many things that he has done and accomplished, however I DO NOT like the repression M$ has caused in the computer industry.

Examples.
When a far better chip was introduced, M$ used influence to keep it off the market because they had not yet squeezed every dollar out of the previous rendition, and did not have software which could use the new capabilities.

Any new OS that was better than theirs was repressed cause they threatened to pull the OEM license if the OEM offered it as a option.

MS Has never created anything NEW in the industry they just BUY anything which will threaten (in their eyes) existing weaker M$ offerings.

This list is not all inclusive by any means.

Questions

Would you fly on an airplane controlled by any M$ offering?

Would you (if it was your living) do FX or other rendering on a M$ system?

Would you use an ATM protected by M$ software?

They are not bad as a nitendo 9x system but for real work you need a real system.  If this were not true IBM, SUN, Apple and SGI would have been gone long ago.

I believe were it not for M$ we would all be running 64 or maybe 128 bit systems today!

Of course this is only my opinion I could be wrong

Actually, he has given away BILLIONS of dollars.

As to why people don't like him, well, he stuck up and the high nail gets hit.

Personally I kinda admire him, he isn't sitting on a huge pile of money, he's using it to maintain control of his company.  He is also VERY active in charity work.

The arguement that his company has hurt the computer industry is BS, IMNSHO.  I remember what it was like when it was fragmented between multiple OSs.  Think of what that would do to the development of something like AH.  In order to make a profit, HTC would have had to have written it for 4 or 5 OSs, that would have reduced the quality and massively increased development time.  Instead, thanks to Microsoft, we have a single OS that can be developed on and a profit turned.

There are other issues, but I don't want to get into those right now.

BTW, this is more of an O-Club topic.

I think cheap hardware killed quality software. What was the price of 1mb of ram 18 years ago, what about 1 MEGABYTE of hard drive?? MS is just like all software companies today, code FAT because they don't have to be slim and trim. I remember in 92 when $50 a mb for ram was a good deal.. yeah $200 for a 4 mb stick   30 pin at that.

I don't envy the man at all. Sure it would be nice to be the richest man in the world (I think) but where I came to dislike the slimeball is in all his business dealings where he has bullied, intimidated, and outright threatened and interfered with legitimate competitors in order to secure Microsoft's lead in the software industry.

All you have to do is read the charges in the government's anti-trust case and the testimony to see. The computer press has been full of cases where Microsoft has stolen code that others refused to license (i.e. Stacker) and there have been numerous cases that Microsoft had to settle because they would lose because they were blatently stealing, etc.

Again, read the charges. Miscrosoft and Bill gates are both slimeballs and I really wish there were alternatives to some software and hardware I use as it pisses me off every time I put even a nickel into their account.

That is why I don't like the guy. He is an utter and complete amazinhunk. His "charity" is probably only to clear his conscience for all the crap he has done to people and companies. Ask IBM, Dell, Gateway, Stacker, Adobe, and a bunch of other companies and officers of same what they think. Ask people who have tried to buy a computer without Windows. You'll get an earful.

PakRat, utterly agree having lived the shorter side of the Mickeysoft stick once. Had a really nasty e-mail with facts in here before but deleted it, learned that you don't mess with Mickeysoft or you may end up being silenced like they silenced many people before. Pretty much, the largest drop in average quality of software in the industry happened due to Mickeysoft in my experience.

An unemployed man interviews for a job with Microsoft as a cleaner.
The hiring manager arranges for an aptitude test (Section: Floors,
sweeping and cleaning).

After the test, the manager says:  You will be hired at a starting
salary of $30 per day.  Let me have your e-mail address, so that I
can send you a form to complete and advise you where to report for
work on your first day.

Taken aback, the unemployed man protests that he is neither in
possession of a computer nor of an e-mail address. To this the MS
manager replies: "Well, then, that really means that you virtually
don't exist and can therefore hardly expect to be employed."

Stunned, the man leaves.

Not knowing where to turn and only having about $10 left, he decides
to buy a 10 kg box of tomatoes at the local supermarket. Within less
than 2 hours, he sells the tomatoes singly at 100% profit. Repeating
the process several times more that day, he ends up with almost $100
before going to sleep that night. And thus it dawns on the man that
he could quite easily make a living selling tomatoes. Getting up
early and earlier every day and going to bed later and later, he
multiplies his hoard of profits in quite a short time.

Not too long thereafter, he acquires a cart to transport several
dozen boxes of tomatoes, only to have to trade it in again shortly
afterwards on a pick-up truck. By the end of the second year, he is a
greengrocer with a fleet of trucks and a staff of over a hundred
former unemployed people.

Considering the future of his wife and children, he decides to buy
some life insurance.  Calling an insurance adviser, he picks an
insurance plan to fit his new circumstances.  At the end of the
telephone conversation, the adviser asks him for his e-mail address
in order that he might forward the documentation.

When the man replies that he has no e-mail, the adviser is stunned:
"What, you don't even have e-mail? How on earth have you managed to
amass such wealth without the Internet, e-mail and e-commerce? Just
imagine where you would have been by now, if you had been connected
from the very start!"

After a moment's silence, the tomato millionaire replied: "Sure! I
would have been a cleaner at Microsoft!"

Morals of the story:

1: The Internet, e-mail and e-commerce do not need to rule your life.

2: If you don't have e-mail, but work hard, you can still become a millionaire.

3: Seeing that you got this story via e-mail, you're probably closer
to becoming a cleaner than you are to becoming a millionaire.

4: if you do have a computer and e-mail, Microsoft is already taking
you to the cleaners.
