.. but you have to remember that the aspect ratio of a display doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the image being 'stretched out' or distorted.

Interesting, I always though that everything looked "widened" with this wide monitors 16:9. So I went to prove it. I just drew a perfect circle in photoshop, 1000x1000. To my surprise it actually looked perfectly symmetrical. I also took a measuring tape and measured the circle on the screen, yes perfect circle.
So how is that, when you first switch to 16:9, everything looks stretched horizontally, the icons, text, the buttons..... Is it possible that my old 15w x 12h monitor was stretching images vertically and I had gotten used to the "wrong" proportions?

My own experience with my 2 brand new 27"; HP2710m and View Sonic VX2739wm

Overall impression: Very similar and a bit disappointed that for over $100 more in retail price for the 2710m the HP doesn't perform better.
Very similar specs that you can see online.
http://www.all-monitors.com/compares/viewsonic_vx2739wm_vs_hp_2710m
Same sharpness, same crappy speakers, both short stands although the HP is much shorter.
I still don't know which 1 too keep!! - assuming that I can fix the "green" issue with the HP.

View Sonic
Pros :
-Cheaper
-More actual view space, 1/4" in each direction
-More realistic colors- more colors temps to chose from.
-Matte finish of the panel ( doesn't reflect light around ) to reduce glare.
-4 very handy USB ports
-higher response time - even though no1 can tell the difference.
-Better looking, slick, and overall size smaller due to the more narrow bezel.

Cons:
Lightness uniformity varies slightly more than the HP.
Angle view, from above, shows darker area in the middle
Many OSD controls are disabled.

HP 2710m
Pros:
Many more OSD controls for sharpness and image adjustments
Better view from different angles
A slight less "blueish" colors.
Brighter overall. increasing brightness and contrast doesn't ruin image as fast as the View sonic. But who needs it?
Out of the box has 75 hertz available.

Cons:
A green tint that I can't get rid of. Tried with the monitor's control and the ATI catalyst controls. Installed latest ATI drivers. No go.
No USB
The stand very short. Both monitors have no height adjustments.
Glare

The green issue-not sure if it shows- the left 1 the green HP:

More controls on the ( left ) HP. The view sonic has them disables and can't seem to access them.

Sharpness is very useful and the View Sonic has it disabled but it looks as good as the HP by default.

Looking from the top, the view sonic has a dark middle band. If both monitors were not raised like I did and relied on the height of the stands, it would be a problem.
From bottom looking up they both have a dark band at the top.

Now, unrelated....as I reinstalled the ATI drivers, first from ATI then, starting over, from the vid car manufacturer I couldn't get all the drivers installed. See the error in device manager. Pointed XP to the same location where all the drivers are ( C:\ATI\Support ) and system32. But no luck. Strangely everything is working. Hopefully some1 has a suggestion  :x

Just got my Samsung P2770FH installed and hooked up today....WOW that is a bunch of screen real estate @ 1920x1080 with ~1ms refresh rate and nice touch button features for resize, etc...

I will give in game details later on tonight!

Are you connecting your monitor through DVI or VGA? With DVI you shouldn't have any sharpness problems (especially considering you got two different monitors to test) unless your display card is defective.

My card worked fine with my old monitors and I think it still fine.

I'm connecting with the DVI cables that came with the monitors. My Radeon X1950XT has 2 DVI.
I read somewhere from a review that some1 had "a bit fuzzy text" which he fixed by connecting via DVI.

Either way, after reinstalling my vid card drivers ( even though I can't get rid of the yellow "?" in the device manager) the quality has improved a bit. Things look sharper.

As for the GREEN tone I fixed it a BIT with the "Digital panel (DVI) 3 - Avivo Color" color temperature setting in the Catalyst panel.

I'm open to suggestions...

I am assuming that you installed drivers for both monitors? My Samsung was recognized immediately by Win7 64bit but still wanted to install Samsung drivers for some reason. I can't say that it hurt anything but I do have more options for cleaning up the images now.

Absolutely. I don't want to take chances. All correct drivers are up. I still can't get the green tint off the HP 2710m.
The HP is a bit sharper but with the colors like this I can't keep it.

I tried to use VGA adapters and use the VGA input on the monitors but the quality is worse.

FYI..

Talked to the Indian customer "service" for HP. Totally clueless of what the "green" issue with their 2710m is. It felt like I was talking to a robot.
They made me unplug the dmi cable from the back of the monitor which showed a little menu which should be white but it's green, so it's not my PC.
Indian lady: "sir please restart the PC and see what color the BIOS screen is". Me: "ma'am, I use magic jack and by powering off the PC will kill our conversation, plus my BIOS screens are blue". Her again: "sir please restart the PC and see what color the BIOS screen is".... Me: "ma'am, can you hear me?"  Her: "yes, sir please restart the PC and see what color the BIOS screen is"

View sonic actually has American people answer the phones.
Anyway HP thinks the monitor is defective and they wanted to send me a new one. Since the sharpness of the 2 panels is the same and the view sonic is smaller overall, better and higher stand, 4 usb ports, no glare, I'll probably ship back the HP.

Probably is a defective Indian made monitor just like the non-understanding tech support.
