What makes a sortie?

What counts as a sortie?  Is it just going on the runway or are there other parameters that have to be met for it to count.

The moment you spawn you have a sortie going. It ends when you "exit flight" (or are back in tower due to death)

1/2 cup of courage
1/4 tsp of luck
3/4 cup of fun

bake for 20 minutes and viola! a sortie

1.) Begin a flight. (Don't even have to start your engine)
2.) End you flight. (By means of landing, crashing, ditching, or being killed)
