That kid got nothing.  My dad swung a mean belt and occasionally a board.  Mom would make us go out and get her a switch.

I was so abused

Lol.  My Mom hit harder than that.  :rofl

Why was the Uncle doing this?  Where was the Father?

Tough one.  Speaking as a parent who has raised three to adulthood and is raising a 4th, and as one who has worked with teenagers for the last 25 years, I'm hard pressed to condone hitting kids.  To me it means the parenting is reactive instead of proactive.  My wife and I debated it a long time when we had our first.  I was more apt to think it was a solution.   She was against it.  In the end we put our energy into being proactive and didn't have to resort to that.

It doesn't mean the 'threat' of what might happen if Dad got mad wasn't there.  But anger was something that rarely showed itself as a parent so that when it it make an appearance, it got the response intended.  I've been told since that my kids referred to it as the "Darth Vader" voice behind my back.

I've been working with young teens for a long time, and Guppy's approach has always worked for me as well.  If I had resorted to violence, I would have lost my job with the quickness.

In my day everyone of importance in your life beat you as a kid. My parents (mom mostly cause dad did not know his own strength) beat me with a strap, spoon, broom or whatever was near. Not for simple infractions BTW

I went to a Catholic school and the stories you've heard are true. There was no going home and complaining about it if it happened to you. You'd just get another beating.

The cop who caught you doing something you were not supposed to do. He'd slap you around a bit and call you stupid then tell you why you were wrong. If that didn't seem to sink in or he felt needed more attention he would take you to your parents and explain the misdeed always leaving saying he would be watching you...and he did. He'd stop by the park or wherever and ask us to approach the car, try to find out what else was going on and then head off to whatever else they did in the community. That I know of, cops are no longer stationed in a single area for extended periods of time here in Chicago anymore.

We had he exact same thing in new jersey. When I was 6 or 7, another neighborhood kid and I found a lighter - and then some bushes. Wouldn't ya know it, the smoke attracted attention. Pretty sure that cop is still walking the same beat every time I go back and visit.

I believe that is still the practice in DC.  Typically see the same cops in my neighborhood - most of whom are gearheads and, thus, completely understand that if I mounted a front license plate, the airflow to the front brake ducts would be adversely impacted.   :devil

I was raised in a traditional English style upbringing living in Australia (Have Dual Nationality)

And I was taught quite simply. You question everything except that which you must not question, and that is authority. If you did disrespect authority you got the crap beat out of you until you did. At least thats what happened to me.
And that simple plan has served mankind for thousands of years....RIGHT up until the last 20-30 years, I hard-pressed to understand how the current methods serve us better

You kid are RETARDED, you better quit before your daddy breaks your keyboard over your head.

How does flogging = good parenting?  I mean as opposed to putting the kid's hand in a toaster and turning it on.

Hey, it happened in my neighbourhood less than six months ago.  That monster will be sitting in prison for a long time.

It still amuses me to see you're still on the boards. Especially when you've been given multiple warnings of Rule #4, and Rule #6.

I admit we're young, dumb, cocky, you name it.  There's no telling how many times I've seen kids of all ages that I wanted to give them a good ole "behind the shed" whoopin' for the way they acted.
