So maybe it's not as bad as the P-40B
« on: January 10, 2011, 09:18:21 AM »
I figured this would be as good a week as any to play around with the P-39D.  My prior experience with the plane suggested that it tied with the P-40B for worst fighter in AH2, and that sending Americans to fly them against Zekes bordered on criminality.  I have now moderated these views - somewhat.  Once you grasp the twin notions that the plane can't climb and can't turn to the right, it's not such a bad ride.  Having that huge rudder makes for some interesting shooting and/or escape opportunities.  AND there's nothing like the thrill of connecting with the tater.

Not that I'm going to pick this for my favorite plane, you understand, but it's been fun learning a new mount.

I was able to squeak a couple of kills out of it against 109s. Your right what it lacks in climb it also lacks in a right turn. I was surprised back in November how well it did against the A6M2. I can see why historically it was relegated to photo recon and ground attack in this theater.

The P-39D is pretty much a dog, there really isn't much to recommend it as a fighter.  She'll turn reasonably well at first, that is until your speed bleeds off which seems to happen frighteningly quick, and the only way to get it back is to point the nose straight down.

That being said I do love the 'ol gal, probably my 2nd favorite fighter to fly in the game.

I did pretty good in the 39Q against luftwaffe rides, but couldn't do poop agains tthe japanese rides in the "D". maybe i'll try the 39d tonight.

half of my fun in the arena comes from taking these heaps, and flying them how i see fit, rather than flying them as they were intended.  :devil

The difference between the 39D and 39Q is similar to the difference between the 40B and 40E.  Not the same planes at all except for the name.

not this tour. a couple of months ago. the map that has 41 right at the inlet to the channel, 42 further east, and 35(i think it's that one) is a 5k base.
 :devil
it was my first night flying the "Q" minus the gondolas, and i got myself caught in a poopstorm of luftwaffe planes........i think(not sure though) that you were one that came in on me when i thought i was gonna sneak away. it was an "in the weeds" fight. i'll try to see if i can find film for a couple screenshots.
