CPU temp question

I got my new 1.4 AMD T-Bird.. have it with 2 fans.. and the temp I get are 69C /156F.

Is this normal or too hot?

What should be a "normal" temp range for a chip like this?

Any help kindly appreciated.

AMD T-Bird 1.4ghz
Asus a7a266 DDR from hell
512RAM, GEFORCE3 Deluxe 64MB
X-Gamer Live!
DVD + Plextor Cd-R
7200 RPM 60Gig HDD (boot)
5400 RPM 30gig HDD (backup mule).

Thats too hot - Check that your heatsink is properly seated against the cpu - looks like it doesn't have proper contact.  Temp should not exceed 55-60 deg C.  GL

Tac! Go to 2Cool.com and e-mail him what your set up is what ur cpu does at desk top and then what you get in AH and he'll let ya know what the best fan for your cpu/motherboard is. 68c ur risk'n  all sorts of strange cpu behavior, but AMD says it wont die till over 90c but lets not go there <G>

Your chip is not in danger of burning up, but stability at that temperature will not be very good.  When mounting a fan on a very high end Tbird, always scrape off that pad they put on there and go get yourself some "Artic Silver 2" if you can find it.  A little bit of this results in about 3 - 5 C lower temperatures just by itself.  Taking the pad off will probably get you even more.  Those pads are not that great, and downright dangerous on Tbirds, since they glue themselves to the core.

Be very careful removing the fan, DO NOT rock it back and forth if the pad did glue itself on.

If it did, I'd just leave it alone, the chances of you getting the heatsink off without breaking something are not that good.

Tac,

  Is that temp reading while sitting in windows or while under load playing AH?  If thats while the cpu is at idle THEN DO NOT PLAY AH OR AN CPU INTENSIVE GAME OR APP!!  That temp is way to hot if it's Idleing, still to hot but not cpu threating if your getting that temp while playing AH.  I know you just bought this Board and CPU, and I'm glad you listened to me about checking the temps.  Most of the mail order places are not placeing enough thought into there cooling solutions on the systems they are making and sending out.  Your not the first one to have this trouble.   I suggest you take matters into you own hands and get a heatsink/ fan combo that will do the trick.  Don't relie on the generic heatsink/ fan combo that was shipped with the system.   Just my two cents.  might not even be worth that  :)

Regardless of the little heating problem TAC, looks like a damn nice system.  When ya get cooled down and play AH, let us know what you're hitting for FPS.  Thaks and good luck!

Oh and let us know what your cooling answer was.  I plan to get a new machine and it will help me plan better!   :)

my current cooling solution is a fricken HUGE fan on full power blowing air into the open side of the machine... keeps it at 65C for a few hours

will get artic silver and possibly an active cooling system.. florida heat and my room temp are quite high.

btw, AH fps is 83 on average running on 32 bit and highest resolution.

21" monitor helps too  ;)

Tac I hope your not saying that you don't have a heat sink, AMD has said even a few seconds without a heatsink/fan its adios, if ya dont have a heatsink/fan don't run your system wait until you can mount a new HSF.A good HSF will run ya 40-50 bucks a new 1.4 is considerably above that.

To be noted guys... the temp on Thunderbirds is hotter than what use to be considered normal. Also the temp reading for the Thunderbirds is done by a termistor under the chip in the MB. Its about 10 deg Cel off I have been told.

 TAC, keep the covers off the PC... put a big fan in your room to circulate the air and get a good Heatsink and fan. I bought the solid copper one w/the big bellybutton noisey fan. I think its a Win38 or something. It droped my CPU temps down 10-12 deg Cel. I also placed a slot fan for my Vid card under my card drilled more holes in my case and mounted a fan in front and back of my PC case. I am going to add a fan on top of the case as well to draw heat out that much more.

P.S. If you add fans make sure they are safe with your MB if you power them off that... they can draw too much current and cook your MB!!! Its safer to wirem up right off your Power Supply.

Of course my pc has heatsink and fan. Im not THAT crazy  :)

thanks for the links, will check them out.

Talked with the warranty guys, it seems that there are some 1.4 t-birds that have come out defective and overheat no matter what. Anyway, im having a poor sap from the onsite support come home and replace the cpu, heatsink and fan. We'll see if its true or not, ill have that tech standby while I close the case and watch the temp. gauge.

Also, the 10-12C discrepancy is not in the chip, its in the BIOS. ASUS has released new BIOS for their a7m266 and a7a266 MBDs to fix the issue. I have the "fixed" bios already. Heh, I would be getting like 80C if I had the old one  ;)

I have an AMD 1.333 Ghz, it runs at 65-75 C (Once it was up to 80 and the alarm sounded off)
But it runs stable at that temp, only thing is when I reboot I has to wait 3-4 min so it gets cooled, or it wont start again.

You better look into some better cooling on that one Lasse, otherwise you won't have a stable system for long.  That is just too hot.

(My 700 @ 927 is only running at 39C.  I'll probably be putting a 1.2 in there in August so well see what it is then.)
