biggest gripe when people say they give away personal information is that you can put your phone number, where you live, your highschool, job, etc. but what most the gripers forget is that all of that is OPTIONAL. facebook doesnt force you to fill in every blank, you do so at your own "risk". and also stated above you can set your stuff to private/block people. first person i blocked was my mother.  :uhoh
Exactly, all that info you mention is all optional, you don't have to add any info to your profile that you don't want to, so if your that worried about that kind of info getting out, just don't add it, and/or set the info to private.

It's not like they have your SSN, or credit card #'s or anything, at most they have your email address, which just about any website you sign up with has, so what kinda info do you think they have that is in need of protection?

Also you can set your Facebook page so only people who you've selected to be your friends can see any info you have, thats how I have my page set, you have to be my friend to see anything other then my name.

Thank heavens they don't have that info I'm sure they would sell it for a buck if they did, you may be able to set your privacy to friends i understand that and that's not what I'm talking about, Facebook has total control over your profile all the info on it and can use it at there own discretion, be it selling it or giving it away to other companies for other compensations, when facebook first came out i thought how cool i tried it for about a month, then i canceled and deleted all my info on my Profile, i typed my email address into facebook last week for giggles and low and behold all my info came up saying welcome back updating all your info ( after deleting my info 1 1/2 years ago) :huh  ummm i thought i deleted all of my info, they keep it to sell to companies

that's why I keep a couple of 'throwaway' email accounts.  I think this is the only site I actually use my real contact info on.

Yeah you can't completely delete an account on Facebook, which is something I agree you should be able to do, although even if you could and it looked like the info was completely gone to you, I'm sure it would still be somewhere on a computer, which I'm sure is probably something that all web companies like this do.

Now as far as the info itself there really isn't any info, other then your email, that is required for you to list, everything else you put on there you do of your own free will, so if the info is something you don't want shared, don't put it on there.

Facebook absolutely has gotten me laid and therefore is ok in my book. :aok

Was working security at a hospital and I only knew a nurses first name...never had time to talk to her in person so I dug her up on facebook all stalker like.

Long story short turns out she had been noticing me too.

How else are you supposed to know if your Wife's friends sister is having highlights put in her hair this afternoon?

They don't need to sell it to companies, all of the ads on Facebook are targeted; I guarantee they make a pretty penny off of that.

Oh definitely, with 500 million profiles I'm sure that there isn't a company in the world that doesn't want to buy ad space on their site, and your exactly right about the ad's being targeted to your profile specifically based on what info is in it, I notice that all the time.

Funny thing is, Facebook's convinced I'm a zionist orthodox Jew for some reason  :noid
I always get ads for study trips to Israel to connect with my heritage, and all kinds of other weird things like that. I'm not aware of anyone in my family who was Jewish :lol

Man look at that growth rate, from 100 million to 500 million in just 24 months, and without a doubt I'm sure it's up to at least 700 million, if not 800 by now since that chart ended a year ago.
