I'm reluctant to comment on things I haven't tested myself. ;)
The tea thing I did today. Wrecked both my new TFT as well as my TrackIR, with no hopes of being able to replace any of them this year. I'm back to a 17" CRT now  :(

Howdy Cap, Dicho

Quick request, when you set up your TIR, let me know how easy it was. I have TIR4 just sitting here in a box and have never installed or used it.Any pointers would be great!

Thanks

I got a ww2 leather flying cap, pulled headset apart and put speakers into the spaces and attached mic to the strap!

Much more comfy than original headset plus the family laughs at me each time I put it on.

It's very simple.  Follow the directions.  :D

It's been a while, but I think I remember (even when I upgraded the software from v4 to v5)...install the software BEFORE hooking up the hardware.  Then run the software and see if it tracks your movements.  You can tweak one of the stock flight sim profiles, or grab and import one that someone posted specific for AH2.

The one thing I recommend it being a little aggressive with the scaling so you don't have to turn your head very far to get your game head to look 180 behind you.  I sit about 3 feet from my 24" widescreen monitor and only have to turn my head so my nose is pointed at the side of the monitor for my game head to be looking behind me.  Set a small dead zone in the middle so your game head doesn't bob around when you're trying to just look straight ahead (I rarely keep my head perfectly still in real life).  Helps with people who easily get queasy, and helps to steady up when you want to take a shot at someone.

You might look at this too. Free Track is a free software download that use your webcam and you build the cap or whatever pointer device.
The Tracr ir5 is somewhere around $150. I spent $4.38 and I'm having a blast with Free Track.
Not sure how to isert hyperlinks.

I run win7. As I remember I had problems getting Trackir4 to work with AH. Had to use TrackIr5 software.
My clip broke at the weak point also. Its not just plastic its cheap plastic.
Fixed it for a while with rubber bands.
Its my opinion but for what they charge those things should be built more rugged.

:rofl  Ill keep that in mind.

Actually i dont have any of the software, would have to dl it from the site. I guess what i meant is getting it set up in game. (views, calibration etc) I had it but mine broke a little while ago,(of course i dont have any software,or idea how i had it set up in my settings folder) so setting it up will be like the movie Awakenings  lol

There is nothing to set up in the game; it just works.  There is an option in the view settings that may or may not be needed, depending on how you have your TIR profile set up.  Basically, it reverses your head movement while looking back.  Your hat switch views will override the TIR input...sometimes that's a good thing.

I was forced to use the clip because Mrs. Wiley kept breaking into uncontrollable laughter every time she walked by me with the ballcap on.

The clip is not a load bearing device, by any stretch, but as long as you don't put anything heavy on it that actually breaks the plastic, it'll be ok.  Mine has a tendency if I happen to drop my headset to come apart at the one joint in cactuskooler's pic, but it's soft enough it just appears to go back together with no permanent harm done, on mine.  I had thought about reinforcing it, but what worries me about that is if you reinforce it before it breaks, and it has something heavy enough on it, I'd say it would be more likely to break worse.  I know I've dropped my headphones and if I'd had it taped or whatever, I'm reasonably certain it'd have broken similar to cactuskooler's.

As for a headset, I use a set of Zalman 5.1 surround headphones.  They're pretty inexpensive for a surround setup, but I've had wires inside them break, so I'm on my second set.  I don't believe I'd recommend them to another person, they're good enough for me though.

Wiley.

I am reading old posts to get a feel what to buy as to a Track IR setup.

My wife of over 30 years already knows I am nuts before ever playing this game.  I have nasal allergies, and where I have my PC setup I need to wear a N95 type dust mask with my headphones.  So as to uncontrollable laughter, there you go.

Been thinking of getting an aircraft cockpit section through Air Force surplus and set it up in a room or independent custom built outbuilding to confirm what my wife already knows about me.  LOL

I want the Track IR setup mostly for flying a different game, jets and helicopters.

I am a retired machinist with a basement, home shop.  If mine breaks.  I will figure out a fix and maybe sell retrofits made out of anodized aluminum.  Maybe I will make my million-dollar idea, yet!

Daubie,

Its easy to use and easy to setup when you first get it. Generally takes about 1-2 days to get past the queasy feeling that MIGHT hit you. After that you are good to go.

the hardest things i'm finding right now, are getting as set that i'm totally comfortable with.......thanks to dot, i've been using one he was kind enough to share, and it's coming along.

the absolute BIGGEST problem i'm having with the trackir right now, is ME. i go offline, fly circles around the drones, i do ok. go into the ta, i do kinda ok. even in the ava the other night, as i was climbing out, imadot was flying circles around me. i was watching him, and the only times i lost view of him was when he went directly under me, or hit my blind spot dead six low.
the problem i'm having is that when i get into combat, i move too much too fast. it's not a problem with the trackir, but with me. my own stupidity in not being able to learn to hold still, or move more calmly.

i will fix it, because this thing is friggin GREAT. i love it.
