Shouldn't CVs flash bases?
« on: January 17, 2011, 01:29:05 PM »
I was just contemplating the comment that parking by a field with a CV can make upping from said field quite a chore due to the puffy ack, giving the CV's uppers a serious advantage, etc.

If bases/towns flashing is supposed to represent the entire network of eyes on the sky and ground, it'd seem to me that someone might take notice of another country's fleet hanging out off the coast of one of your bases.  For gameplay reasons, it should probably be a bit shorter range than the aircraft, but it does seem to me that a half-dozen LARGE BOATS incoming should make the network take notice.

It's a fine question that I have pondered for quite a while and have gone back and forth with often.  Part of the setup now is the game code.  It would need some tweaking but probably not too much.

This has been discussed recently.  If a TG doesn't flash a base just by sailing nearby, it should start flashing the base once the guns start firing at the base/town.  Even if someone doesn't notice a bunch of ships off the coast, you'd think they would notice large explosions and buildings being destroyed.  :D

That is usually my dividing line too......  If guns are blazing, the base should be flashing!  +1

Hmp, must've missed the earlier thread.  Absolutely once the explosions start occurring, someone should probably notice.  I still also think within a certain range, the little dude in the tower might take notice of dots on the horizon.

+1  I can guarantee that someone on a field or in a town would hear and report the impact of 5" and 8" shells.  They are pretty obvious explosions.  Start field and/or town flashing as soon as shells begin impacting!

agreed if a single ac over water gets a base flash then a CV should also.............

what range to set it at? bomber, fighter or Gv ranges?  Its bigger than a Gv but lower than a fighter................

It'd seem to me, logically, it should be visible range from town.  I'd think 15 miles would probably be a decent spot to start.  Don't forget, theoretically there's a guy in the shore battery twiddling his thumbs watching the ocean.

Under what criteria does the flashing stop once it has started? What if someone fired the gun once and abandoned it? Will the base continue to flash until the CV moves away?

Yep.  Explosions alert the base.  Alert stops when CV moves far enough away.  What "far enough" is would be up for debate...radar ring, 8" gun range, etc.

I think this would depend on how the radar is modeled.  What I mean is that historically surface/naval radar had a range of about 60 miles max.  So that would mean in theory that a radar station could pick up a surface contact and relay that info on up the chain.  I would think that in order to fair and historical in context that a CV and its task group would flash a base just before the point the 8" guns are in range.  That would be IMO a fair way to alert the base but allow the CV to still shell before action could be taken against it.  What are other thoughts?

In theory.............   The cv deck is about 100ft above sea level.....  DotDar is 200ft or maybe 500?  But DarBar is only 65ft.  If a cv group is in the dar it should at least be popping a Bar.   :salute
