got my trackir today..need headset recs?
« on: January 24, 2011, 09:48:04 PM »

haven't had a chance to hook it up, due to working around the house. i also don't really have a great headset to use with it either. this is the one that trackir seems to recommend. what do you guys think? i can spend to the ballpark of $100, give or take a few bucks.

well i'd prefer to spend less......and i saw a logitech set at walmart last night for about $40.....they were usb though. i dunno how usb headsets would be here....and that should've been part of my question.

the only reasons i'm getting new ones, is that my current set is dying, and they go behind my head, rather than over....and i need over to put the trackir thingie on.

The one I'm using is a normal 2.5mm (or whatever) plug-in and I have had zero issues with it.  Not sure the brand/model, but I might still have the packaging and can check when I get home - I tend to keep computer-type boxes for a while.

I've used two different head set. The difference is how 'fat' the bar that goes over your head goes. [assuming you got the pro clip]  The "Pro clip" clamps around the bar the goes over your head. If the bar is too fat, it won't fit around it. If the bar is more like a thin wire, it won't clamp snuggly and could shift during use.  So the only Tracker consideration when picking a head phone is whether the clip will fit and clamp securely to the headset. As big a concern is whether the headset shifts on your head. Big comfy head phones that stay put are great. The only brawback to the OVER the ear headphones with hard shells for teh speakers, is that they muffle sound not provided by the headset. So you wife will have to yell very loud for you to hear her. But also, if you like to use a combination of sound systems, which I do, it makes it difficult. EXAMPLE: I use headphone for VOX, but run the game sounds through my speaker system, because I love the booming bass. This can be achieved with headsets that are small and light with thin foan pads that cushion your ears. But these headphones can shift under teh weight [even though it light] of a trackir clip.

Hope that helps

TrackIR will definitely fit tight on those headphones, much better than headphones with a thin head band.
The TrackIR's locking clip has a firm, foam rubber insert, which at first fits tightly on a thin head band, but after normal use the TrackIR starts to tilt down as the foam rubber loses its shape. Looking at the photo of the headphones, I think you may not even need the foam rubber insert.

Also the TrackIR is very delicate where the LED "Fork" is attached to the arm off of the clip.
Mine lasted about 6 months before the wife ack got to it, I'm surprised it lasted for that long.
Hopefully they changed the design in the last couple years.
Good Luck!

Which is why I started un-clipping it when not in use...foam memory.  :D

This is very true about foam memory.  I finally got this set for Christmas this year. I had a pair of plastic logi-craps (G-35, I think) that lasted for around 1 1/2 years until one day of pulling up the ear piece to listen to the wife it broke off & I noticed that the other side had the same fracture. I promptly taped them up and used them until I got some EarForce headsets from Turtlebeach. These were fine headsets except for the mic that plugs into the ear piece on one side. It had a habit of not connecting back up when you pushed it off to the side.  Anyway the Saitek PH09 Pro Flight Headsets are very authentic and have a bunch of great features.  There is a volume knob on the one of the ear pieces, the boom mic actually reaches out in front of your mouth, the plastic cushions are very comfortable, & best of all, the frame is spring metal :aok  A new Proclip would fit on it nicely as the foam memory that happened from the logi-craps forced me to cut some custom pads from a water pipe insulator to get them to be snug. Now they don't move a bit :rock

ps. I ordered them from here http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp;jsessionid=CEBB8A495B9FB5ABAFDC7656D19AE4C1.bbolsp-app03-34?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&_dynSessConf=449572533786143241&id=pcat17071&type=page&st=Saitek+PH09+Pro+Flight+Headset&sc=Global&cp=1&nrp=15&sp=&qp=&list=n&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960 for $99 + s&h

I know, right!!!! They have the feel of David Clarks, too.  I would like to eventually find a Sheep skin band for them. I would make them incredibly more comfortable :aok

By the way, I saw this
it takes a 9volt battery, which the reveiwers said was a pain in the patooty & wished for an on/off switch

& this

which is usb so I would say it does not need battery

I found these at http://www.marvgolden.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/265x/5e06319eda06f020e43594a9c230972d/g/o/gol1044_1.jpg  p n

For a sheepskin band try the seat belt covers. They're about 6" long and wrap around the seat belt, and have velcro to keep them on. There's of course foam rubber versions, usually with some type of art on them.
