Mouse Viewing tips for guys without trackIR
« on: February 17, 2011, 09:14:13 AM »
Go into "map controllers", and set up you mouse.

I have my wheel set adjust FOV-iow zoom in and out, and one button set to toggle mouse pan.

You might have to adjust your mouse sensitivity all the way down. I did.

Now you can fly around fairly zoomed in and use the mouse in your non-stick hand to augment your snap views. Use the wheel to pull zoom in and out as needed quickly

I must admit, the narrower field of view/higher zoom that allows you to see objects better combined with panning around constantly to cover all spots/looking down slightly to glance at your now very large, very readable instruments does feel very realistic.
"Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture, torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals."

I'm liking the trackIR, I've only had it going for a few days and am still getting used to it so it's more of a hindrance than anything right now, but I can see some real potential for when I get it all worked out.

Here's an interesting thread about a software that uses a cheap webcam and no reflectors or LEDs.

if I hadn't sprung for the trackir I might check that out.

and thanks for the tips bnzs...that will definately come in handy with the face tracking software.

to be honest, i was going to try vr goggles. i posted about it a couple months ago.

what i found out, was that i'd more than likely be unhappy with the resolution offered by the "affordable" ones....affordable being about $400. vulcan i saw in that thread uses a set that cost about $1800 from what i can find on them on the net....and he seems happy with them. i couldn't afford them, and wasn't gonna spend 400 for somethign i had too many people mention wouldn't be very good in here. thus the trackir.

i didn't buy the trackir because i have trouble spotting cons far out. that is actually quite easy. id'ing them isn't till they're close. i bought the trackir, because without the big red "shoot here" billboards, i was/am finding that if the con can get me into a heavy turning fight, then get under my nose, and get out past 1k, i can't find him. i've also done this to others. i was losing them in the view switching. with the trackir, if i can keep the con in front of my 3/9 line, i have no trouble keeping my eyes on em now. but we all know that there are generally multiple merges in a fight. when they get behind me is when i have trouble.

i'm glad bnzs is still coming in. i'm glad he figured out the mouse thing. i've seen his name on the boards a lot, although i've never fought with or against him. if one were to judge by ones posts.......i like the guy. he's always respectful, and somewhat polite. that makes me want to like him too. i don't care if he's a good pile-it or not......if he's a good guy, and looking for fun, then he's the kind of pile-it i(i think we) want in the arena.  :aok

Okay, been doing some research...sorry guys, after alot of flying, I still think the no icons is far from ideal.

Basically, some planes blend too much against the deck. They all show up well when skylighted. The default 109 texture from 1000 yards plus though, is practially invisible otd when you *know* where it is. When I say "on the deck" I mean somewhere between you and the ground, not nessecarily low alt...the lack of depth perception is hampering here.

Somehow there needs to be more contrast when planes are at distances where they look like a dot or a + sign.

It's far from ideal yes, but as close as we've gotten so far IMO.
