I have a cat problem
« on: March 02, 2011, 05:01:56 AM »
So, it's 1/4 to 5 CST. I'm sitting here having a cup of coffee, when I here an awful wailing in my back yard.

About 5 months ago some lowlife dropped off a pregnant cat in my alleyway and the cat gave birth to 5 kittens. Momma cat vaporized, but the kittens went on to be good alleycats and some got gave away while 2 stayed in the neighborhood. (I called animal control, but what are they gonna do with 2 more cats?)

My wife and son are allergic to felines, but I figured I should give the alleycats a bit of leeway as they are good mousers.

Last week, we had another cat show up out of nowhere. No collar, but obviously friendly.

Now this poor cat is sitting in my yard, screaming like a maniac.

It's -9 degrees and I can't bring it into the house. I think that the mousers are keeping it out of the garage.
It ran from me when I tried to pick it up.

Should I shoot it?

Should I leave it be?

I'm going to open the cellar and put a pile of hot meat and gravy out.

Seriously, I need to figure out a long term plan for this cat that doesn't involve my house or the shelter.

I know by brother has a whole bunch of homeless cats living around his house. He says that they yell during the nights from time to time and it's normal. It also gets really cold during the winter there.
I guess it depends on the cat, if it's used to it or not.
If your concerned about the cold you can try making a fire outside for the cat (you can also take a cardboard box fill it with something warm (like sheepskin or preferably something cheaper) and put it outside) and as you said leave some food there. Keep in mind though if you give it food do not expect the cat to leave.

Call 311 ask them what they can recommend, perhaps there is an animal shelter nearby.

I highly do not recommend shooting it unless the car is injured and will not survive for long. Even though most cats are domestic their nature is still to survive in the wild, they are hunters.

No shelter for the cat. They will kill it.

I'll leave some food and a door open.

Don't tell the wife. I'm not trading one pushy for another, that's for sure.

I think MachFly's idea to put out a cardboard box with like a blanket in it is a good idea, you should try that if you have the box.

All I know is that if my wife catches me letting the cat sleep in the cellar, I'll be needing the box and blanket.  :lol

UPDATE: The cat is fine for the next few days and my Grandma could use a mouser at the farm, so I'll go for a live capture this week and transplant it. Springtime is at hand.

You shoulda seen the fiasco that we had when we were scooping feral kittens up with a fishing net.

They tore the heck outta my buddies, it was hilarious.

I think this new cat is rather tame and can be had with some food and kindness.

Leather gloves with full gauntlets are on hand if the need arises.
