Can older Pre SATA drives be connected to newer motherboards?

if the mobo has ide/pata connectors yes...if it doesn't you can buy sata to ide/pata adaptors at amazon for around $4 including shipping...

Easy way to do that is with a IDE/SATA to USB adapter. I think I paid about 12$ for mine, but it came with a power supply to power the drive, power adapters (sata, floppy, etc)

Lets you plug in a floppy drive, CD/DVD, IDE HD or SATA HD, shows up in windows as a mass storage device.

Very handy tool.

Another route is an external drive enclosure for an IDE drive that plugs into a USB port.  The one I use with my desktop has it's own AC power.  The one I use with my laptop is powered by the USB port.  $6-15 is about the range.  Speed is so close to internal as to not really be noticable.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.
