I think it's a good idea and would add another dimension to the normal chain of events. Burning fuel tanks aside, I think an engine fire should be extinguishable in an extreme dive if that worked for real. Although it's not modelled, the assumption could be made that the crew already shut off the fuel supply, killed the electrics and activated any extinguishing equipment fitted.

We would need engine fires then.

Yep, engine fires aren't modeled into the game, only fuel fires... which is why you blow up every time with no hope of survival.

surface and structural damage is modelled in ah...to a point...if you flew online and paid attention to all the "kewl stuff" already modelled in ah you would see it...bullet holes of varying sizes do appear on the aircraft...you can get half a wing shot off...whether that's due to damage from enemy fire or ammo boxes being hit, you never know because it's not really important...your missing half a wing because bullets of some caliber hit it and you're going to have to take off in a fresh plane as soon as you get in the tower.

i'm not sure how many of the wwii planes have the new structural damage modelling the wwi planes have at this point, but it's coming.

in reality...i know it's an unusual concept...engine fires are generally caused by fuel being ignited in some fashion...not oil...you can shoot tracers into engine oil and it will smoke but not ignite. ammo inside cannisters is not easy to discharge without heat...an instance of the "golden bb" could hit a primer if the angle of impact was right...but a bullet that discharges outside of the chamber of a weapon explodes the casing very much like an aerosol can in fire and the projectile travels a short distance at low velocity...unless it's an explosive round, the worst that would happen is the ammo belt/cannister would be damaged.

I'm not extremely familiar with the anatomy of a B-29 (radial engines yes), but tracing the origin of the flames back in the picture I stole from the screenshots thread, they clearly seem to originate from within the actual engine cowling, escaping through the louvres? I assume the schematic is illustrating fuel pumps there?

I'm not trying to be argumentative but the flames in the screenshot do look like an engine fire, do they not? One can see at least why one might form that impression.

yeah, but thats just it. i dont have my own computer and i havent got a credit card to pay online with.  so the most ive ever done is play offline. not even missions., and actually, i have noticed that stuff-- different hole sizes and whatever. i just havent spent any time playing AH since about november, and so havent seenall the new "kewl" stuff.

all i can say is OMG it figures...


you don't need a credit card to pay online...one of those visa/mastercard debit cards from walmart will work...even a money order by snail mail...ya know, instead of wasting your birthday and christmas money on stuff you're not going to pay attention to in 3 months...save it up and buy yourself a few months of ah online...maybe do some extra chores around the house so your parents will pay for you.

My squadie splash01's father was a m16 gunner in world war two. His dad told stories about him shooting at airplanes. He shot down a fw190, and did many hedge-row "classified" missions. Anyway he say his group was shooting at a ju88 and it's motor caught fire and the plane dove to the ground. He looked in his binoculars looking for the pilot and gunners that he thought bailed out. He said the ju88 fly off into the distance as soon as they moved and the fire went out, so in RL you could dive and possibly get the fire out and fly back? Why not in AH?

In AH we don't have this option to cut fuel off from engine, we only could turn it off.

Kevin Eldridge's Super Corsair blew a motor at Reno, which started a rather scary oil fire. Eldridge bailed out. However, as the Corsair accelerated into a dive, the oil fire blew out... Had Eldridge pushed the nose over he may have extinguished the fire and saved an extremely rare aircraft... However, no one can blame him for getting out as fast as possible. One must play the odds.
