Is this normal?
« on: March 13, 2011, 02:09:46 PM »
After a few hours of thinking, it dawned on me that if my parents were to ground me for the rest of my life I wouldn't notice it.  I'm a 14 year old kid and I haven't left my house (other than to go to school) in months.  Afterwards I'm at home on my computer, then I do my homework and go to sleep.

Is this normal?

Back in your day my balls, kid!  I remember back when you were just an annoying little grasshopper! (LEGOMAN).  Yes, but now my parents are in their mid-forties and early fifties.  One has arthritis and the other has a leg broken in five places (with a titanium rod inside).  They can't run, jump or swim with me (6 minute mile vs 9+ minute mile).  Even with sedentary projects such as a potato cannon or a model airplane, the answer is always "Go study some more".  I know they love me and want the best possible future for me, but dang it seems like I won't have a childhood at this rate.

At 14, yes I would say that that is pretty normal.  Now, when you are a couple years older and have an opportunity to either sit in your room on your computer or have a social life with human interactions, I suggest that you turn the computer off and go out and live a little in the real world.

No its not normal.  At your age its important to develop your social skills at an early age and you cant do that hiding in your house.  You need to get out more for sure, I just got back from a 10 mile bike ride down to the beach with my 8 year old, she loves it and its a good time to spend alone with the little ones with no distractions besides the added benefit of exercise.

Some part time work is also worth looking at, it helps you develop social contacts outside of school and to rely on others to achieve a common goal.
No thank you Turkish, I'm sweet enough.

I spent the first 18-20 years of my life (im 22) hidden at home (most of the time)... I'm just getting started to enjoy the oustide life and I'm starting meet some interesting people (that includes girls). I realized how much I wasted my time playing games instead of getting my brain to develop the appropriate skills for social life (at work, friend's, school, even home) and education/skills.

So, I'd say at 14 you still have time to enjoy your time as a kid and profit from your spare time but not too much so as to be prepared to get into the grown ups world without any cyberdependency or social anxiety leftovers whatsoever.

Like phatzo said, work is a good place to start, as long as you don't screw up, stay open minded to critics and use your brain  :salute

Hmm, sounds like a plan; only that I live in the middle of nowhere.  (There's one kid from my school in my area, and my highschool has over one thousand kids).  The cyberdependancy and social anxiety hit home, though- I feel like a mole blinded by the sunlight.
