Bomb Bay Doors
« on: March 16, 2011, 03:38:53 PM »
My wish is twofold, firstly for the bomb-bay doors to prevent bombs from being dropped until after their tips clear the bomb racks.  Secondly, I wish for there to be a sound associated with it, to tell the pilot when they have opened.

My reasoning for the bomb bay doors: If the bomb bay doors are open instantaneously, they are more of a safety switch than protection for the bombs and a reduction in drag (when closed).  If they are instantaneously openable, then realism suffers drastically.  It is strange that bombs can go right through the doors without damaging them.

My reasoning for the sound: If the pilot is in the bombardier's seat, then he cannot know whether or not the doors are open, and risks damaging them by dropping prematurely.

when you open the bomb bay doors...in the text box...orange letters..."bay doors open"

even works when you're in f3 mode...nifty hey?

if you watch the animations...it's not instantaneous...unless you're seeing a glitch

never seen bombs drop through the bomb bay doors, unless it's a graphics glitch.

HTC has said that the bomb-bay doors are (in effect) open instantaneously.  The sound seems like a good idea for historical immersion and feeling like a bad--- while flying a bomber.

In the B-17 the pilot was not able to hear the bomb bay opening or closing.  One of the jobs the radioman had was to open the door that seperated his compartment from the bomb bay and visually check the bomb bay doors were open and then confirm over the radio.  He would repeat the process after the bombs dropped to verify there wasn't a bomb hanging in the racks and then one last time when the doors were raised.  The system message you see on the chat buffer pretty much simulates the radioman's radio confirmation the doors are either open/closed.

Nothing wrong with this wish, imho.

Along the same lines, gear shouldn't support the weight of the airplane 0.5 seconds after they are lowered.

It makes sense, but I think it's really a non-issue.

I don't know about hearing the sound the the door open/close but I agree with everything else you said. Also I'd like to see the same thing for the gear.

It would be a nice touch to hear the doors open or close.  I think the user should be in the bombardier's position only, to be able to hear it though.

Actually you can hear the doors operate...or at least you can when wearing a noise canceling headset.

The animation in game looks pretty close to reality in my experience.  Here's a video showing the doors opening.

Colmbo do you still fly for the collins foundation? I'm flying up to see the B17 and B24 at gillespie county on April 9th.
