To be honest, I don't think that joining a squad would be a good idea. I find that when I'm flying with a squad I get sloppy and stop worrying about SA and such because I'm with the horde. When I fly solo I have to constantly be looking out for enemies and don't have anyone to back me up if I mess up. I can't just drag and bag all day when I'm flying solo. I agree that I need someone to help me out, but I've done my research and learn really quickly, and for someone to help me out would require a lot of time on their part. I'd need them to give me specific things that I do wrong like, "you need to drop flaps here," etc. I know when I do stupid things, mostly because I get bored of people running away all day so I'll enter a fight with a significant disadvantage. It's the little things that I don't know about and it's those little things that make all the difference in a rolling scissors fight.

It's way more fun for me to up in a mossie or 190 and just BnZ or HO than it is for me to beat my head into the wall constantly by trying to maneuver against people without knowing what I'm doing wrong. Like I said, I could spend months to years learning it myself, but I'm playing to have fun, and I can have fun right now by BnZ and HO.

Hoff, good enough then. As long as you are having fun there is certainly no right way to play this game despite what many will say. I play my way and others play theirs and as far as I am concerned it is all good. I will point out that not all squads are hordes, however, but no matter I get what you are saying and as I said I don't think there is a right or wrong way to go about it.

I have no way of knowing what I'm doing wrong when trying to maneuver against an older player so attempting to do so is pointless because I won't learn anything from the encounter.
You do, film it and either glean something on your own or post it on the forum along with what you can make of it.  Even if that's not much or if it doesn't make sense, someone will "debug" it for you.  And showing that you made an effort to try and make sense of it will only improve your chances of motivating someone to help you.

This is evidenced by the fact that I tried to fight FLS yesterday in the TA but lost very badly every single time and he has no way of telling me what to do to fix it and I have no way of figuring it out myself (other than spending years beating my head into the wall, which isn't an option IMO because I can have fun now by HOing or BnZing).
You don't have to go full blown ballerina with ACM, you only need to figure out how to not get killed so that you can pack more HOing/BNZing fun into your sorties.  Sometimes there isn't great chemistry between teacher/peer and student/peer, so maybe try another trainer, or try again with FLS?  Maybe he just wasn't having a good day.

If you're up for it you can PM me in the game anytime, I'll come to the DA or TA with you and try and help out.  Or ask anyone who you think is doing what you want to do better than you are.  No harm in asking..

I'd love to learn how to actually fly, but it's hard to find trainers on in the TA. I've had a lot of people offer to fly with me in MA, but after flying with them I haven't learned anything at all. Flying with a trainer in the TA helped a little, but not really a whole lot, it was mostly just a humbling experience. I really don't know how to progress at this point, so I might as well have fun until a way to learn how to fly presents itself.

I'll definitely take you up on that offer when I get a chance to get back in game.

not sure when you are on but if you see me on give us a shout...not sure why it was a humbling experience with a trainer as you should have been shown things to help and try out in the MA's...what happened with your trainer???

I am not a trainer but I'm sure I could run through a few things that could help you out a little...I offer this because you are saying that there are no trainers and the people that are offering help on the boards are not about so perhaps you fly nearer my time zone

I'm a night owl so I tend to play anywhere from 6pm CST to 2am CST.

Also, it was humbling because I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong and he couldn't tell me without viewing film of my cockpit apparently, so I just ended up losing a whole bunch without really learning anything other than I can't compete right now.

Yea, this week I've been staying up late to watch the Starcraft 2 world championships in Korea (yea yea, I'm a huge nerd, I know) and they come on at 4am my time.

The first 2 merges you didn't want to hear anything, you were sure you knew what you did wrong. Finally I got your attention and you asked what I was doing. I told you what I did to beat you and I suggested you film it to see for yourself. I mentioned film 3 times and you never bothered to turn it on in 50 minutes of merge practice. I also explained in another thread what I did and what you needed to do. You need to lag and keep your speed up. I don't mind if you just want quick results but if you want to learn ACM training is available.

hoff you think that any veteran of this game or other flying games hasn't spent their first few years banging their head against a wall??

some keep banging it,  some get it, some log off frustrated.   But don't try and insult those that have tried to help you.  :uhoh
