SdKfz 251 Wish and Question
« on: April 20, 2011, 09:16:01 AM »
While reading up on a previous SdKfz 251 wish thread, a light bulb flickered in my head...

A: I'd like to see some form of indirect fire, namely artillery added to the ground game.  What better way to try it than to add in a 251/2 (8cm mortar w/ 66 rounds) variant???  The chassis is already in game so modeling would be minimal.

B: Since we are able to set salvo and delay settings in bombers, would it be possible to do something similar to these new self propelled artillery vehicles such as set a salvo amount, delay in firing, or even an area to carpet (from X to 300 yard diameter or such)?  Or what about taking the current system that is used on the ship guns with using the map for locked/not locked point of impact?

C: Other good canidates for self-propelled artillery are 1> the M7 Priest (based on M4 chassis) w/ 105mm howitzer, it has a 12,000 yard range; 2> the M3/T19 haltrack w/ the 105mm howitzer (also 12,000 yard range); SdKfz 251/9 w/ the 7.5cm infantry gun (same HE round as the Panzer IV, but w/ a trajectory like the LVT-4). There are others as well, almost anything that uses a chassis already in game would help with modeling and getting it implemented.

I think this is a great idea and give it a huge +1 because it would be nice for town and base attack

Heck, it'd be nice to be able to do that with the 28cm rockets we have now.  I'd use the 45 degree launch if I could get a decent bit of accuracy out of them.  I cant even see the impact using the 45 degree launch, too much stuff in the way.

It would seem though that since the launcher is set for 1 of 2 degree firing angles that adjusting those impact points would not be as easy as it is with the naval guns.  Although I dont have a German SOP handy for using the 28cm rockets, I'd like to believe that when they pulled those 28cm rocket armed SdKfz 251's up into play, they were able to adjust the range.

Stop and think just how much more the 251 would be used if the rockets could be used in a feasible manner???

the rocket holders on the 251 were stuck in position. you could not move them unless you take the time to take the rack off, and replace it... its not like the calliope
