GV Rudders for turning, Throttle for moving
« on: April 26, 2011, 12:21:25 PM »
Please let us assign axes for controlling the GV.  I like how I can still man the guns with the joystick and I like how I can assign the rangefinder (C/V) to an axis, however it just feels so gamey to use WASD and assigning those commands to my throttle HAT is not much better.

Using throttle for vehicle speed and rudders for turning would be really cool!  That way, the stick would still be reserved for controlling the guns.  Actually, what would be REALLY NEAT would be to let me use my split throttle to control each track.  That way, I could turn right by applying full left throttle and half right throttle... or I could spin around in place by applying full left throttle and no right throttle.

I'm fine with removing the need to shift gears, and to be honest I don't have that much against the commander's position.  I'm also fine with the addition of WASD type controls and mouse aiming.  I completely understand why the change was made, and as a business decision I understand that isn't up for discussion here.. HOWEVER please don't punish the rest of us who actually enjoy finer, more accurate control of the GV itself.  I know it's not an integral part of the game but having to press buttons to accelerate and turn really removes a huge amount of immersion that this game provides, and immersion is a big part of what draws me to love this game!  And I know I'm not the only one thinking this.

I think the change that you've made is a good decision for the most part, but please re-enable the ability to assign joystick axes for throttle, brake, and steering.  It' be awesome to see a throttle1 and a throttle2, one for each tread... just like how it works for engine1, engine2 etc. for airplanes...

Just like it would be gamey if you needed to step on a gas pedal to go or a brake pedal to stop.

so would it be less gamey if we needed to use dual sticks and a gas pedal to drive the tanks around?

Less gamey than WASD, yes.

Keep in mind, my proposal has nothing to do with removing the WASD commands, rather it has to do with regaining the ability to program control back into axes already present in our HOTAS setups.  I don't feel it gives any kind of tactical advantage over people using WASD+Mouse and it would keep many of us happy.  Also, it would eliminate the "nintendo thumb" I'm already starting to develop from operating the tank using the thumb-controlled hat switch on my throttle.

Ha ha that's easy.  It sucked dodging iron bushes last night.  Flipped twice and stopped dead making myself a beautiful target for the enemy.  Rudder control back at least please? :pray

Been gone and have not seen any of the new update. Ready to get home and check it out!
I have wondered tho why the gv's couldn't have been set up like the pt boats tho. Forward and reverse button then throttle for movement speed
On the x52 you have the hat switch on the throttle that could be your directional control keys
Also if you have pedals you could set the brakes up as left and right steer since the peddles wOnt work yet

Just some thoughts

Ready to try it all out.  Haven't had my AH fix, in over a week
Flying since tour 71.

+1  As a gv regular, I can live with most of  the changes. I'm asking for the rudder twisty/pedals ability back aswell. People who are saying your turning ability is much better with the A,D/hatswitch new system. Clearly never enjoyed gving in the first place. You should've saw me last night bouncing off hedge rows like a pinball. While navigating the town, being straffed in my m3. My thumb was spent after that LOL.
