so i got to thinking
« on: April 26, 2011, 09:15:09 PM »
with all of the car threads, and talking about this problem, and that problem...........how, or why does it still feel like just yesterday when jobs that seem stupidly simple to me, seemed like they were gonna take me all day?
i mean jobs like replacing timing belts(99% are scary easy),  replacing drive axles, brakes, shocks(well, mostly not hard), struts, springs, etc.

these things are so simple i almost think one could train a chimp to do them. yet it feels like yesterday when some of those jobs actually seemed hard to me, even though it's been nearly 30 years.
diagnosing is almost the same. you guys probably remember the ford tempo i mentioned in that other thread(the one that i still haven't heard kgb admit he was wrong over). that tempo kept me busy with my dvom, the shops mitchell manuals, a breakout box, and let me start messing with a fluke 97A. THREE FRIGGIN DAYS!!
yet today, it is rare for it to take me longer than one hour to figure out nearly any no-start, driveability problem, CEL problem, or emissions failure.

it makes me feel old, because it seems as if someone flipped a switch, and suddenly, i'm 49, rather than 19.

anyway....that's all i got for now...gonna go watch the military channel a little more........

it was kinda just a rant of sorts.....wondering where the time went, etc.......

and a break from the half dozen complaints about the update.......

yea..........what i typed in the op, i was talking to my uncle about the other day....not the car stuff....but the "where did the time go" part.

it's weird, 'cause just going through my day, in my mind, i feel the same as i did 30 years ago. then my body does something silly like ache or something to remind me that i'm not.
then i look in gthe mirror, and see a nearly totally grey beard(when i'm not clean shaven), and the serious lack of hair on top of my head...and then i stand there wondering when all that crap happened.

The other day I looked at a picture of my when I was 7 or 8. I thought I still feel the same I did back then, what has changed? Last year went by so fast. So much has happened, and It just seems like life goes by really fast.

Come on over to lexus and we'll let you replace valve springs on the LS600h hybrid or get paid 3.4 hours to pull the dash, steering column, console, dashboard cross support, remove the a/c core box to replace the a/c evaporator.

Diagnosis requiring multi-meters is still big and I fielded sometimes from 15 to 40 calls per day from some angry tech. who claims we "blue streak/standard motor products" sold him 3 bad control units.

On fords, I find the dpfe sensor (formerly egr sensor) compromises the 5v reference voltage signal......which is divined by the same power supply that runs the ecu.

Tough diagnosis and repair is still out there.

why would you only get paid 3.4 for a job that calls for 7.3 hours?

the ford dpfe sensors? 99% of the time, if you've got a code p0401, you've got a bad dpfe sensor. can you say moisture?

and yes, there are some toughies out there.........i am suspecting you've missed the point i was making though.......

OMG ! He mentioned my name... :rock
I stopped reading that thread after entire Aces High community  from school boy to Almighty Skuzzy himself decided that  somehow your 30 years of experience was not enough to argue and jumped on me.

yea....most of the time when i think, i generally either hurt myself, or get someone seriously pissed off at me.  :D

EDIT

i also didn't view it as the community "jumping" on you, and truly believe that had the positions been reversed, the exact opposite would have happened.

that isn't/wasn't the point of the op though.......i feel like an old guy........ :cry
