that kinda sucks. what caused the fuse link to blow?

It wasn't blown, it was just rotted. I recognize Fords automotive achievements but, "heat shrinking" two wires merging into one and calling it fuse link is just beyond my comprehension.

if you're referencing the DOHC 4.6 ford engine.....it appears to me to be a take off of the old 427 cammer.

Yamaha designed heads for both the original Taurus SHO v6 and the later Taurus SHO v8.

Yamaha, during this exact time period, designed heads for the toyota V8s, the s3gte, and more than a few others.

The current lexus v8 heads use the exact same type of chain actuation, tensioning, and rocker arm type as the ford dohc modular motors and even look almost identical when viewed with the valve covers off.

If there were patents held by ford or lexus, there would be crazy lawsuits over them being near identical so I'm pretty sure these current heads are either riding a patent licensed from yamaha or derived from the design.

i forgot all about the sho v-8. i actually thought that was a yamaha engine, but i've never worked on one of them.

The wrecking yards out here have many lincoln mark VIII with the dohc that also has the italian cast teksid aluminum blocks.

That's 250 bucks for one of these complete from pan to alternator to power steering pump to manifolds.

Amazing starting point if the shortblock is not trashed.

I wish I had a ford with an engine compartment wide enough to house one because the dohc mod motor is capable of huge amounts of horsepower very little mods other than boost and engine management.

They just don't sound as cool as the FE big blocks, though..........until they rev above 5k or so.

So what was the reason behind unreliability of original  Taurus SHO Yamaha engine?

Manufacturing defect on camshafts that allowed the sprockets to come loose meaning indexing was lost and valves hit pistons.

they weren't set up like the 4 liters, with no dowel pin, were they?

like i said....i've never worked on them, and only ever seen one.......so i'm fairly clueless about them......

Correct on the "no pin".

Some field fixes were pinning and others were welding but I'm wondering if welding could end up having a sprocket with runout which would wear the chain out quickly.

that was an effed up idea to begin with.

the very first time i saw one of those 4 liters, having problems, which i traced back to that cam gear, i couldn't find much in alldata. mitchel, or anywhere. talked to a couple friends, one of which had done the welding thing.
we sent ours to a local ford dealer, as we weren't willing to do the welding thing. it has to be one of the dumbest things i've ever seen to be honest.
