How do you capture a base?
« on: April 30, 2011, 01:15:26 AM »
I've actually played the game on and off for a long time.  My first flight was back in the days of Warbirds, before they had textures in Warbirds 2.0.  I've continued on with Aces High after the weird debacle with selling Warbirds to another publisher and having to start over as Aces High.

After having been away for a while now I decided to come back after the last patch change ground vehicles to be more user friendly and similar to other online games (battlefield series for example).

Well, I was helping capture a base last night.  So, you would think I would know this, right.

Well, I know the basics.  Things have changed over the years and now you capture a town and get the base with it.  I also know that the town flag will change to white.  But, you know how I figured that out?  I was online last night and heard people talking about it.  Like that guy at a cocktail party I just kept quiet and hoped somebody would say what to do, and then I could act like I knew what to do the whole time.

Well, I decided to check the website for the instructions.

There are no instructions, guys.  Why not?

P.S.  Your vehicle driving instructions are out of date.  The say to push your stick forward to throttle the engine up.  Also, ship gunnery training talks about using the mouse pointer as a visual aid, but doesn't the game not allow you to have a mouse pointer?

That is a link to a forum post.  I asked why there isn't a useful or up to date user manual.  This isn't what I want.  I just want a link to the website page that tells me how to capture a base.  Forum posts come and go, and that isn't what I was looking for.

I'm guessing there isn't a manual.

I mean, come on guys.  Just a PDF to download would be fine.  We have guys who donate their free time to make plane skins, but nobody can be conned into writing a basic manual for free instead?

Best thing to do is sneak in at night, when everyone is sleeping.  Change the locks and the number on the base to confuse em, then evict em when they wake up.

Hijacking a ground vehicle thread isn't cool.

I did go read it, but that doesn't actually fully answer my question.  Posting stupid jokes....also, doesn't actually answer my question.  I hate being rude, but I will if that is what it takes.

Ok, so bombing buildings is somehow important.  What buildings?  Are they the airbase buildings, like hangars.  I am ASSUMING that you bomb the town, but I have to ask.

To take a base:

1. Destroy at least 80% of the town buildings.  The flag will turn white when this is accomplished.

2. All of the defensive guns in town MUST be destroyed.  If even one gun is left active, your troops will die.

3. 10 (uninjured) troops must be dropped in the town (by a C-47 or GV troop transport) so they can enter the map room (looks like a bunker and is situated next to the flag).

If all the conditions are met, as soon as the 10th troop enters the map room, the base is taken.

Ok, good.  I was doing things wrong then.  I was bombing the airbase.

Just not sure why this isn't on the actual website FAQ or information pages.  I think some time needs to be spent on updating all of that, or making a PDF user manual people can download.

Go Bish and hang out with the Devils Brigade for a couple of days. They'll teach you how to capture a base.

We have guys who donate their free time to make plane skins, but nobody can be conned into writing a basic manual for free instead?

Instead of a dedicated manual, Aces High relies on a volunteer training staff and WIKI pages to provide information on how to play the game.  The very basics are provided by HiTech in their HELP SECTION and it is up to us to figure out the rest.  There may not be many Aces High players who contribute with written manuals but there ARE plenty of trainers in the "TRAINING ARENA" and the "HELP AND TRAINING" FORUM that can answer your questions.

Also keep in mind that the method for taking bases (that have a town) has changed recently, and also that a MAJOR release of the game that changes how ground vehicles work has been released LITERALLY a few days ago.  HiTech Creations is a very small company trying to pull a profit with an (AWESOME) game in a very niche genre while charging a very affordable price.  What this means is that they don't always have the resources to keep the documentation current, and because of all of the people who gladly volunteer their time to help out new players much of that documentation would go unread anyhow.

Add in the fact that the office just moved their physical location, that a new version was JUST released, that they are working on patches for the new version, that the owner just had a baby (congratulations HiTech, btw!), AND that a holiday just passed by... and you can understand why the documentation isn't exactly "up-to-date".

For future reference, please take note that people who come here asking for help, and then complain about the quality of that help are usually not tolerated for very long in this bulletin board community.  Personally I feel that you should apologize to BaldEagl as he's been around a long time and really knows his stuff.  I can understand your frustration, but there is no excuse for taking that out on the people who are only trying to help you out.

Good day.

*NOTE: I just noticed the Aces High WIKI link is not working.. perhaps they took it down so that the old 'outdated' information could be purged.

Damn straight.  Somebody has to be the ace fighter pilot and stop the Blood Pact invasion.  That was actually a damn good book, and the author seemed to know his fighter plane lingo and tactics pretty well for being a space opera novel, especially since it was for Warhammer 40k.  Oskar Viltry was my favorite character, the bomber pilot.

I know Warhammer 40k can get over the top, but Double Eagle was well, well toned down on the overly bizarre elements of 40k, and way up in the realism department.  It honestly felt more like the Russian Front than it did a normal 40k novel.

It was certainly a MUCH better novel than X-wing from the Star Wars book series.  That wasn't worth the paper it was printed on.
