Max monitor size for AHII?
« on: May 02, 2011, 08:55:28 PM »
Since the search engine is not working at present I will ask here. Is the largest monitor that AHII is able to use a 30" screen?

I know one guy that used a 50 TV as his monitor. Sat across the room to play.

I'm not sure I understand the question.  The physical size of the screen has nothing to do with it.  Because of that, Aces High would run just fine on any size screen.. heck you could probably hook it up to a jumbo-tron if your video card would support it!

Now the pixel count is a different matter but again there is no limit to the number of pixels Aces High will run on.  Your limitation as far as that goes is how good your video card(s) are.

It is a common misconception that larger monitors have more pixels.  This is actually not normally the case.  Especially since High Definition standards have come into play on televisions, computer monitors (for the most part) match those standards.  Yes there are exceptions but not from the 'economy' options available at your local retailer.  Simply put, most larger monitors have the same number of pixels as the smaller ones but the physical size of each pixel is larger.

If I take my 24" computer monitor which has a resolution of 1920X1200 and compare it to my 47" television (technically a monitor as well because it lacks a tuner) which has a resolution of 1920X1080, then in my case my smaller monitor has more pixels than my larger one!

Again, to more clearly answer your question, there is no limit to the physical size of the monitor required to run Aces High II.

Actually larger _monitors_ usually have more pixels. A 30" monitor can be 2760x1600 or similar. Large flat screen tvs usually have only low resolution panels because hd video doesn't need anything more. This is why large monitors are more expensive than large tvs.

And yet I knew you'd still put your TWO CENTS in here.

If you took the time to read what I actually wrote, you'd have noticed that I said "YES there are exceptions but not from the 'economy' options available at your local retailer."  Yes you are correct in that there are larger monitors out there with more pixels, but they are the exception rather than the norm.

Below is a screenshot I took from the Best Buy website.  You'll notice that it shows they have 30 monitors that are 24" or larger in size.  Just below that, you'll notice that out of all of their monitors, they only have two that have a higher resolution than 1920X1080.  This tells me that your statement about larger monitors usually having more pixels is simply false.

It's not a theory. Larger monitors have higher resolutions unless they're some el-cheapo jokes like the stuff Best Buy seems to store. Who buys hardware from BB? Lol.

And yet I knew that's EXACTLY what you would say again.  You're so predictable.

That's your problem.. you nitpick the small 'facts' so much that you distort the bigger picture of things.  You would probably dismiss an entire post regardless of its accuracy because of one single grammatical error in it.

Anyway while I'm sure "Your Majesty" is too good to shop at Best Buy there are still many people here that do.  As a result I wrote my post with those people in mind.  However, in order to appease YOU I just took a look at Newegg and found the following:

All three of their current 30" models have a resolution of 2560X1600.  The prices of those range from $1200 to $2300.
All five of their current 27" models have a resolution of 1920X1080.  The price of those range from $300 to $1300 (most being below $500).
Of their 24" models, six show a max resolution of 1920X1080, and six show a max resolution of 1920X1200.  The price of these range from $150 to $1150 (most being below $400).
All I am trying to point out here is that physical size of the monitor often has little to do with its resolution!

While you are correct in that the 30" models do have a higher resolution they hardly qualify as an "economy" option for a monitor at least as far as I am concerned.  The VAST MAJORITY of people will consider a larger monitor to be bigger then 20" or so, and of those who want even bigger will usually use an HDTV in its place.  The few people who actually have a need for and the money to spend on a larger, higher resolution monitor are the exception and NOT THE NORM.

REGARDLESS in any case, the physical size of the monitor has NOTHING TO DO with whether Aces High will run on it which was the OP's concern.  Aces High will even run at higher resolutions (regardless of monitor size) *IF* the computer's video card can support it.  This has nothing to do with WHERE the monitor was bought and it has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the hardware that Best Buy sells.

Seriously.. get off your high horse and live in the real world for a change.

you are so of touch with the real world...you live in one of those gated communities or a manhattan highrise? if you had said that about walmart or target, even sears i would have agreed but best buy does carry the same quality as you find at newegg, tigerdirect, cdw-g...you just have to be willing to pay 5-10% more for the convenience of being able to see, touch and smell it.

Lyric your video card will push 2560x1600 even better than it does 1920x1200.

Newegg has the Acer 32" monitor priced at $339 right now too.

If you are asking because you want to use your television then yes it will work with your HDMI line. Im not sure if you will be happy with it though.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

I've built a couple of these setups:

Both have 32 inch tv's for a screen. one is used for xbox exclusively and has 720p resolution. The other is a 1080p and plays aces high with all the eye candy maxed except bump map. I am running an 8800gt video card and e6850 processor in that one with 4gb ddr2 800

i do.   what of it?

to the OP:  sometimes i'll bring my tower downstairs and hook it up to my 61" tv.   however, the tv is only 720, so it doesnt look nearly as good as my 1080p widescreen monitor.   in reference to the original question, i'm pretty sure the game is universal to about any monitor size.
