Yet more new planes
« on: May 04, 2011, 09:45:57 AM »
I would like to see the Dornier DO335, the Gotha GO229A and the P-55.  Although the P-55 never saw combat, I have flown it in another simulator and once you over come some of the smaller issues, the plane is much better than anything in the game (in AH and the other sim).  Link to a site with some background information on them all: http://www.combatsim.com/memb123/htm/2002/05/cfs3/

The DO335 is not a fantasy aircraft and it did see combat (however brief it may have been).  It was only in service for a year before the war ended and only 37 were made but that's still more than a few of the planes in AH.  The GO229 never saw combat and was still being tested when the war ended, but it is still a good looking plane.  The only thing that killed the XP-55 was the fact that by the time it was done being tested, jet fighters had come on the scene.

The only plane the could even be considered is the Do-335 and even that didn't see enough service or meet most requirements for the game. PLUS we don't need anymore late war super-fighter.
+1 for PBY-5A

The only thing that killed the XP-55 was the fact that by the time it was done being tested, jet fighters had come on the scene.

Found a blurb in America's 100K on the XP-55.
Quote
With this data in hand three XP-55 prototypes were constructed.  Flights of the first plane started in mid-1943.  Shortly thereafter, in spite of all the earlier data collected, the aircraft crashed after pitching into an inverted position during stall tests.  Testing continued with another aircraft modified , but poor stall characteristics and Allison engine cooling problems dogged the aircraft. Since performance was no better than types in production, there was no advantage in continuing development, and the XP-55 program was stopped.

It's quite common knowledge. Just tell him.

There are 3 criteria for inclusion into Aces High:
- Must have seen combat
- Must be a production aircraft (no preproduction or prototypes)
- Must have served in unit strength (i.e. not 12 other planes with 1 single Do335 or whatever)

None of the planes you listed, Dragon, match any of the requirements.

Thank you for explaining these rules for me, I was unaware of the requirements.  At first I thought "well why is the ME163 doing in the list? I've never even herd of it".  But looking into it there were about 300 made.  Even though they only shot down about 9 aircraft.  (I can do better than that)

It never saw combat.  There is a report from a French ace that reportedly spotted a lone Do 335 flying on the deck and attempted to dive to intercept, which the Do 335 was able to reverse course and easily escape from the Tempest.  However, this report has never been verified and Pierre Clostermann was known to embelish the truth a bit in his book where he detailed the alleged encounter.

you could huh.....funny here in AH we don't have real rounds blasting away at us....you don't really friggin die, and to say you could do better to me is extreme disrespect to those that gave there life doing what we pretend to do.

I read your "location"....................

IT'S WRONG!

I have been to 300,000 feet.  So if you don't know what height is, don't talk about........  Same with these planes!  :salute

And yes, AH World is very small up there!

I totally get the gee whiz factor when new guys find these late war gems, I really do.  What I don't get is why
they think they are the first to discover them.  Do they really think no one else ever googled or checked a history
book or two?  For 10+ years??  :lol

I suppose it is possible that hundreds or even thousands of players could have missed the 335 or the 229, but
not very likely.
