They are good when they want to be, but sometimes slow as a snail on some items.

Was it shipped priority, parcel, media mail, 1st class?

As a retired Mailman, Can tell you  I used to get all sorts of missent letter, parcels, etc.                                                                                                                                                                      A lot has to do with the ability to read the address,
especially Zip Codes. Machines do a lot of sorting at the plants. And barcoding.
I worked in NJ, I would get letters from 1 part of Houston to the other,
via NJ. Due to stupid, so called "More efficient" machines.

They should start by stopping Saturday delivery. Then they need to do a surcharge for those who want deliver to their box. Instead, they need to get Americans to go to the post office and rent a box. The reason for this you ask? It is the 21st Century.

A vast majority of mail is advertisements. Basically, we are subsidizing the marketing campaigns of private companies. Throw in the internet, how many people conduct serious aspects of their lives via snailmail? A large number of people, a diminishing percentage of America. They need to get with technology and phase into a new reality. They are operationally acting like it is 1911, not 2011.

Our city is currently discussing the postal service wanting to close one of our post offices after opening a new complex and the fliers advertising the public hearing of said closure were CONVENIENTLY DELAYED until 2 WEEKS after the hearing. :headscratch:

What they need to do (if nothing else) is to stop giving bulk discounts to the repeat junkmail offenders... actually quit giving discounts period.  Have a set rate for Postcards, and a set rate "per ounce" for normal and priority mail, and I also like how they do their packages now.  I also like the idea for charging for mailbox service.  I can't even begin to imagine the maintenance and fuel costs for their delivery vehicles!!  It wouldn't need to be a large charge - just enough to cover the costs of the delivery vehicles, maintenance, fuel, and the salaries of the delivery drivers.  Removing Saturday deliveries would cut a lot of costs (especially in overtime) and I like having the option to pick my mail up at the post office.  Maybe after a month or two you get a notice that says "pick up your mail in three days, or pay us $10 to deliver it or it's going into the furnace".

They've gotten themselves into a pickle with all of this junk mail.  It reminds me of an auto repair shop I used to work for.  When times got touch and we got slow, they enticed in more customers by offering very cheap oil changes.  Yes it brought business into the door but mostly the cheapskates who want a cheap oil change and nothing else.  It got to the point that the only way we could sell repair work/maintenance is to offer steep discounts which makes it simply not worth it.  Our reputation shifted from the place to go for professional service to the place to go for CHEAP service and we ended up having to close the doors as a result.
