I wore a black beret before Rangers were ever authorized, wore black as a Ranger, Red as Airborne, and the PC, Infantry all the way. Never knew a soldier who did what they did because of the beret, nor really one who really cared who wore what except those who were jealous someone actually got to wear them. Gen. S was in my opinion right at the time of the change to do so. The headgear was, and still isn't, about those of us who have put out the sweat and blood to be who we were. I will even say this, I wore a green beret though I wasn't even SF (172nd Inf Bde, Ft. Wainwright Alaska), headgear has changed over the history and no individual group has the real right to say they lost a specific color except the tankers (they wore it first to help while riding and working inside the tank). I say Gen S was right because the purpose was recruitment which was badly needed at the time. That time has come and gone and as with anything, change moves us on. I do give one exception to the SF simply because President Kennedy decided to re-authorize it's wear and it has become synonymous with that branch and as such serves as a great recruitment tool. (although in the words of the instructors at Camp McCall, if your here for the beret I suggest you quit now and go buy one).

Good call then on changing the beret, good call now on dumping it.

If you have no idea what you are talking about, as is your case, you shouldn't open your mouth.... ever.

You SF boys ever get out of your lawn chairs to actually join us on a real mission

Mark my words the beret will come back. Because the military have always worn impractical headgear. Because the wearing of it means something other than the protection of the head from rain or bullets. Sure the beret is a pain. I still have mine and smile at how much work it took to look right. I used to despair at the clowns who simply couldn't wear it in a military way. But the good soldiers always got it right.

The British paras wear the red beret. Before they earn it the recruits have to wear what they call 'crap hats'. Guess the US have decided to go with crap hats.

Brits used to wear bright red coats too, I don't think it was a very good idea then or now. I thought the thread was about the US Army.

Incidently, the tankers wore the "black" beret as it hid the grease they worked in every day. :)

Blood was less visible with red coats.

It seems odd that no-one has invented an under-wire beret yet.  Would it would remove the whole messy affair of shaping it?

Oh, that does make it tougher.  So now that grunts don't wear them, what do the other guys do with them?

They did, our berets had a special stiffener around the badge area. The very first thing everyone did was to rip it out and go to work making the beret look properly individual.

Are these blues actually blue? Or are they similar to our Service Dress Blues...
