Torpedo Balancing - Pt. 1
« on: May 14, 2011, 03:39:10 PM »
This kind of goes along with my PT Boat wishlist thread, but since it includes aerial torpedoes I thought it best to separate it.

The problem: due to the necessity of having to launch aircraft at all times, the CV group travels at full speed (30+ knots) at all times, instead of at a more realistic cruising speed.  This fact, along with not having any realistic torpedo aiming devices, makes it extremely difficult to score hits with a torpedo.  So much so that torpedo attacks are pretty much nonexistent in AH these days.

The proposed solution: an update to the torpedo launch parameters, and the torpedo types, range, and speed settings to make torpedo attacks a more attractive option.

Specific changes:  (these figures are rounded from actual war figures to make it easier on those of us who don't normally use meters)
1.  The American Mk.13 air launched torpedo be given the launch parameters recommended for the late war models - speed up to 400mph at an altitude of up to 2,400 feet.
2.  The German F5B (JU88) air launched torpedo be given the launch parameters of the late war model - speed up to 250 knots at an altitude up to 400 feet.
3.  The Japanese Type 91 air launched torpedo use the 1944 parameters allowing a launch speed up to 350 knots, at an altitude of up to 400 feet.

These changes give the attacking torpedo bombers at least a fighting chance to get their torpedoes launched before getting blasted out of the sky.  Even with these enhanced launch parameters, the CV group is going to be scoring a lot of hits on the attackers since they will still have to get in close to score hits with torpedoes.

Pt. 2 of torpedo balancing will deal with torpedo speed, range, and warhead size.

Given that the Axis (fast) torpedoes are modeled together, we could split the difference between the F5B and the Type 91 and set a maximum speed of 300 knots @ 400 feet.  See Pt. 2 for the range, speed and warhead calculations.

Be better to just use the Japanese stats.  Ju88s are unlikely to be launching torpedoes at 350 knots.

im totally can not relate to this wish...i think the japanese had possibly the best torp in ww2 germans probably second...i believe other torps were also used such as acoustic homing torps, magnetic and of course contact, and i think some air torps could be set to tun a pattern like a sub torp.....would it be better to have those in AH?

True, but the Type 91 mods that were good for 350 knot launching speed had a shorter range as well (1500M).  I'd be up for HTC modeling the german and japanese torpedoes separately, but that might be too much to ask for at this point.  I really want to get the launching parameters and range up a bit so that we see more torpedo attacks and they have a better chance of success so people actually try it out.

The PT boat is really the killer though - it is hard to get into close range vs a CV group going 30 knots - you need to have a longer range torpedo, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to bump up the speed on the PT's to the late war engine models that would do 45 knots in trials.  Yes, I know that the boats didn't typically make 45 knots in action, but CV groups didn't run around at 30 knots all the time either.  The crux of this thread is to help get more action out of some rides that typically don't get that much action because they are dependent upon torpedoes to make their attacks.
