I think the hordes are required to maintain interest in the game, as most folks fall into 2 categories. Quite simply "for the horde" or "against it" Sadly there are far fewer who are against it, "umm this may not be true" maybe "less organized" is the phrase more appropriate. There is no "mission planner" that can be made to contest the hording of a base, the game mechanics are such that "on a planning" standpoint all the advantages go to the horde mission. Until there is a fundamental shift in how the "offense" and "defence" relate to one another "unchecked hordes will always be here. I believe it begins and ends with the player base, as ALL of these horde missions contain veteran gamers playing to the "lowest standard" If those with experience would "up their standards" we could begin to narrow the gap tween HORDE and FUN  :salute

I don't why I posted? Just to let the few guys who do know me that I'm done.  I really haven't logged many hours lately. Working lots of OT and life gets in the way.

I do miss the old days when the game was about air combat.  I never recalled having to try to defend against 50 planes swarming a VH base!  I'll be back someday. I just need a long break from this game.
that is what wirbs are for...also b17s are the best way to defeat the horde, they all chase you giving your buds a string of pearl to sweep in on and at least im able to kill 3-4 of them before they get me and they chew up all their ammo and have to rtb

I never said fancy or extremely skilled organization did I?        In AH just getting a large group together all doing the same thing at the same time constitutes organization most of the time lol.  AND that is what I see people complain about most of the time. :)

:lol OK, with that definition I would have to agree but some nubes may call that a hoard  :neener:

What Jugler said, to have the game be any different than what it IS, would require the sort of forced participation in adhoc squads you see in WOT or 1st person shooters....doesn't really lend itself to the intricacies of fighting WW2 aircraft

Have to disagree on this. At least the "I feel people fly more together these days in larger squads" part. If anything squads have gotten much smaller in the last couple years. There are not near the squads with multiple wings as far as I can tell as when I first started playing. I for one was a long time Bird Of Prey back when they had what, 4 or 5 wings and I seem to remember many large squads like that that have shrunk drastically or totally dispersed all together.

Just making a couple observations here nothing more. :)

By flying together in a squad it could mean they are flying more effectively and perhaps less likely to take risks because their squaddie may be depending on them and there is generally more incentive to get home together and land kills together. That is just my general perception of late in the MA, I also watch over a lot of films of sorties and can recognise a lot of squad flying.

I don't really know what the solution to this is either it was simply an observation, it certainly seems to kill diversity in gameplay.

I put in the work to host the tournament.  I have that right.

I've been playing for almost 16 years.  I've taken breaks (without giving up my subscription) but somehow never felt the need to post about it.

Good for you, the BBS would be a good idea to let a few guys he knows know he is leaving rather than try and catch them all online at the same time, theres plenty of look at me threads for you to post in on this BBS.

I think "NO standard" would be more accurate. Don't get me wrong, some mission planners are really nice guys, BUT for the part, they don't set these missions up for fun but rather to fullfill their own freak Napoleonic desires. Its hilarious to see some of the "mishun gods" straggle behind to let the noobs die for the fatherland, meanwhile they are feeding off the scraps and RTBing with a few kills. But then again..if you are against missions..then you must be in it for the score   The proof is by the new guy that is the only goon that gets berated for dropping troops at a Field rather than town. You would think at least they would take the time with these guys at least to teach them what they did wrong.

What this game needs is incentive for new guys to at least TRY to do well. Give names in lights saying that XXX survived a 3 vs 1 to at least achieve some sort of notoriety that "hey..this guy must be good".
Although probably a coding nightmare, it would definitely improve gameplay.

Indeed. Back in 2001 after the demise of Air Warrior, many of large uber squads migrated to AH...including the AK's, MAW's and The Damned, which numbered 70+ players divided into 3 flight wings. The horde is nothing new. Perhaps the rosey concept of pure air combat existed in the very early beta days but in the 10 years I've been around it's been horde vs horde.

I think that is the big misconception. We didn't have hordes back then like we do know, Hordes almost NEVER fight each other. What we had back then was Furballs.

Furballs are masses of fighters in a tight area where all kinds of fight could be had. High alt fights between the "pickers" that can in over the top to dive and pick. Turn and Burn for those who liked to get in deep and and either liked the challenge of bagging a few and getting out alive, OR bag as many as you can before your dead. Drag and Bag fights, slide into the edge of the furball and try to drag a guy out for a 1 vs 1. Some even took place over water and PT boats could get into the action.

Hordes are nothing but locusts. They roll over a base in minutes destroying everything. If the mission fails, they go some place else. If the mission succeeds, they go someplace else. The only fight they generate is for those first few uppers that try to get up before the vulch is set-up.....if you want to call that a fight.

In the old days, squads went head to head for a base and fought over it all night if thats what it took. You knew "who" you were against, and you learned their tricks as they did yours. It made for epic battles. Today most of that type of game play is gone.

Hope to see you again some day Heretic  <S>
