The DA machine
« on: June 07, 2011, 05:29:00 AM »
I think there are quite a few people out there that like to 1v1 and would duel more, but don't want to spend time and effort seeking an opponent. What if there was a quick way to arrange duels?

Setup:

The Pits.
10 small areas within the DA, with no bases in them, but two airspawns. Those pits are not reachable by any conventional means

The Tower.
A single field, where you can't take off on your own at all. Here in the tower everyone that's looking for some action will meet.

The Clipboard.
Has two buttons: "Not matched" and "Ready"
When "Not matched" is NOT pushed down (default), you will only fight in matched setups, that means both combatants will have the same plane.
When "Ready" is pushed down, you are ready to go.

The Machine.
Will randomly select two players being ready and having the same preference (matched or not matched) and throw them into the fist free pit (airspawns). The fight is on! But there is a timer... only 5 minutes per fight!

The Scoreboard.
Yes, there will be. Name, number of fights, number of fights won. That's all.

So you have 2 people in the DA who want to duel and can't manage it without a special program?

It's like a "Quick Match" mode you see in other online games. If you're looking for a fight you'll get one, you could get a good match or a bad one but you'll get it quick.

Nothing would stop anyone to have any kind of duel he wants. DA has plenty of room.

It's just an additional mode. Go there jump in, get spawned and let yourself be surprised who your enemy is and what your planes will be.

I didn't mean it that way. I realize it wouldn't prevent people from dueling the usual way. I just don't see the benefit. It seems like the current method of simply asking for a duel is sufficient.

The benefit is speed. Surprise (yes, surprise can be fun!). Easy to use for those of us who do not really speak/write english. No need to search for opponents. It's indeed a "quick fight" method.

Simply asking isn't nearly as effective as you would think.  There is a sub set of players, the most skilled, who can pop into the MA and announce that they are seeking a duel on 200 and get one.  Most of us, especially the pilots of only modest ability such as myself, find it quite a bit more difficult.  People don't just jump to go to the DA with me, believe it or not!

If you aren't one of the "cool kids", it can be frustrating trying to get an opponent to go to the DA.

I would use a system like Lusche is suggesting.  I would use it a lot actually.

I would go a step further.  I would set it up so that while in any of the arenas, a player could set his status to "Seeking Duel" with the qualifier of "Same Plane" or "Different Plane".  Then any other player could click on the players name in the roster and "Offer" to duel.  If the first player accepts and is set to "Same Plane", then when ready, both players are automatically transported to a private "instance" with a 5k (or whatever) airstart.  When the duel is over, the players are returned to their previous towers in the MA.  If the first player had selected "Different Planes", clicking on his name would bring up a special chat box where the two players can discuss and set the plane match up as well as airstart altitude.

A system like this would allow broad dueling without the need to lose your spot in a capped arena too.

Who is going to wait alone in the tower for a "quick fight" duel?

How do you know you will be alone? On peak times, there are 40-70 players in the DA. What makes you so sure this offer will be ignored? You can't imagine it could be "popular" even ?
And even just two guys having  scheduled meeting in the DA could use it, to have fun in a *random* plane match.

And I think one factor PDFactorDave mentioned is also really important: A lot of the players actively dueling each other in DA have already know each other and have a kind of reputation. It's really not that easy for the mass of newer players to find someone to duel.

I'm pretty sure that you'll have to have one person waiting in the tower for the second dueler to show up unless I missed something.

I don't see why the mass of newer players can't just duel each other now.
