No, the 409 has a much shorter stroke. The 409 has a 4.312 bore and a 3.5 stroke, it's a big bore short stroke engine, and if you can update the rod, piston, and wrist pin, you can spin a 409/425 to 7500 and it will make close to 600HP, without any other modifications. The piston weighs near twice what my 427/425 piston weighs in the Camaro. The 396 is 4.094 bore and 3.766 stroke. We race a 427/425 Camaro in Stock, and a 396/375 aluminum head Camaro in Super Stock.
Most people do not know that the deck of a 409 is not 90 degrees to the bore, it is 60 degrees to the bore. You can't even use a ring compressor to put the pistons in, you have to know the secret. I'd actually like to build one for Stock, but the cost of the block, heads, crank, and intake would be as high as a complete fresh 427. It's actually a good combination, but you have to have a lot of money, and most people won't build a stick shift only combination. It would cost near twice what I'll spend building a 69 Chevelle 427/425. I miss the old 409 though, it was seriously nasty, and no one knew what it was.
